Pubs in Dublin for 30/40 somethings :)

Hello! I'm the same woman that posted about honeymooning at The Four Seasons! Thankfully that all got sorted - in the best possible way!

Also, I want to tell you that I have your book and have used it on both of my trips to Ireland. The first, with my Mom and last year with my fiance! It's wonderful, and if any of you haven't gotten it, GET IT! :)

Ok, so we're staying at O'Callaghans apartments from 28Dec to 01Jan, then Four Seasons from 02Jan to 05Jan, then back to O'Callaghans till 11Jan. Have you ever heard of these apartments? I can't find any reviews on the web. I stayed at The Alexander in Dublin last year and enjoyed it, and the same company owns these apartments.

Now to my other question. My fiancee and I are 38 and 40 and would love to find a few pubs that will be fun, but not too rowdy while we're there in Dublin. We spent last New years Eve in Dublin and while it was great fun, we're looking for something a bit more low key this time around. Do you have any suggestions? Not just for new years, but for the whole time we are there.

The first time I was in Ireland I was only there in Dublin a day, last time, we were there two days as we spent 2 weeks in a rent a car rambling 'round the country! - So, this time we will really be able to enjoy the city and its environs.

Also any other suggestion of fun things to do?

Thanks!

Gina,

What a relief that the Four Seasons worked everything out for you. I hope all goes well with your plans. Thanks so much for your opinion of my book. I'm glad it has helped with two trips to Ireland so far.

I have not looked at O'Callaghans apartments but they have an excellent reputation with all their other properties. Since they seem consistently good, I think you are pretty safe assuming that the apartment will be a good place to stay.

I think you might enjoy some of these pubs:

O'Dwyer's: http://www.capitalbars.com/xml/Bars/ODwyers/PubTalk.xml

Cafe en Seine: http://www.capitalbars.com/xml/Bars/CafeenSeine/PubTalk.xml

Castle Inn: http://www.fxb.ie/castle_index.html

Ryan's: http://www.fxb.ie/ryans_index.html

Doheny & Nesbitts

Oliver St. John Gogarty: http://www.gogartys.ie/pub/

The Porterhouse: http://www.porterhousebrewco.com/

The Brazen Head: http://www.brazenhead.com/

The Long Stone: http://www.thelongstone.com/

O'Donoghues: http://www.odonoghues.ie/

Abbey Tavern (Howth): http://www.abbeytavern.ie/

Johnny Fox's (8 miles from city center): http://www.jfp.ie/

For New Year's Eve a big crowd always gathers for the ringing of the bells outside Christchurch Cathedral.

For fun things to do definitely take the hop on hop off bus. On rainy days go for the great museums: National Museum, National Gallery, Chester Beatty, etc. If you have any interest in Irish history you should definitely see Kilmainham Gaol. Visit the President's house on Saturday's only. I think that this website will give you a lot of info on what you might like to see in Dublin: http://www.visitdublin.com Also consider taking a day trip or two either north of the city to Newgrange or south to Wicklow.

Wow - thank you so much! Great advice (as usual). I have lurked here for some time, but figure I may as well log on as a 'real person' as opposed to anonymous!

have you heard of Evensong at St Patricks and/or Christs Church for New Years Evening?

Gina,

Nice to know you were enjoying the advice here even when you were a "lurker"! Putting a name with different posts just makes it easier for me to associate all your posts as a whole. For instance someone might say when they are going to Ireland in one post and then go on to others under different subjects. If they don't have a name I don't put the different posts together and have to ask questions all over again, trying to put the puzzle pieces together.

I think you will find the info you need about the cathedrals and their programs, etc. on these sites:
