Hello everyone! I love this forum. It has been a wealth of info. Insurance4carhire DOES cover people from the US driving in Ireland, right? Does it cover a 2nd driver or does one pay for 2nd driver through rental agency? This car rental business is stressful! I am thinking I will be renting the car for 11 days from Dan Dooley. Has anyone rented from them lately? We will be going to Ireland Oct 19, 2012 returning Nov 2, 2012. I'm getting very excited and nervous!
I have had great satisfaction from Dooley over the years. There are other options, but the part of their approach is that everything is up front, no hidden costs, and I have found them to be easy to deal with.
Insurance4car hire will or will not cover US licence holders. I have been unable to get much sense out of them in my attempts to get them off the fence. The Annual policy is definitely Not available the weekly policy may be but you would need to phone them for details. You would have to pay extra for a 2nd driver to be written onto the basic legal requirements, you would also have to pay an admin fee for use of 3rd party insurance. On top of that not using the hire company (whichever you choose) full insurance will cause a "Hold" to be put on your credit card.

Thanks for the reply. Am I reading your email correctly in that you don't take SCDW or have not used insurance4carhire in Ireland? SCDW is so expensive through the car rental places. Or maybe you have the credit card that covers SCDW...I do not! I have just today rented the car through Dan Dooley. I have been trying to look around on the forum for insurance4carhire, but am not seeing a lot of info.
Also, as far as making reservations, do you go to Ireland without reservations & wing it or do you book before you go? (do I need to make a seperate post for that question?) I am a newbie!
The Super policy just covers the "Excess" on the insurance not sure how much that equates to with the car you will hire from whoever you hire from as these sums are all diferent. Car hire is a nightmare, just be sure of what you are getting and check the hire car as if you were buying it with the mortgage on your home.
Winging it the t2p way. or how we did Ireland before we moved over.
Book the 1st and last nights. Pin a Michelin 712 map on an empty wall. Decide any must see places and pin them. work out some stepping stones(towns) on a rough route. get a list of 3 guest houses and 1 hotel for these potential places. email the hotels and ask if there are (1) any events or festivals locally on your possible dates. (2) if the hotel is doing any special offers on your possible dates. Talk to your host and ask in the local pub what's worth seeing. Phone ahead at breakfast for the evening accommodation. Only book one night at once, if the place is good or there's things to do and see within a 30mile radius book an extra night.
Tourist Information Bureau are great and will always find you a bed for the night. Provided there is one available and of course provided they are open! not much fun knocking on doors at 6pm.
And by the way..Welcome to the forum.

T2P, Just found out that icarhireinsurance does not cover US citizens only EEA. But I think worldwideinsure.com does. I will be sure to check the car as if I were buying it with the mortgage on my home. Ha! That was funny! But I am going to take pics of it when we pick it up and when we return it. Will see if I can dare to wing it your way! As you said, no fun knocking on doors at 6 pm. But I like your advice. (I did not realize you live there) I am sure I will be asking you all on this forum for more. But I better get busy since we leave US on 10/19/12.
We have waterproof shoes, jackets w/hood & pants. Do you think I need an umbrella too. I am thinking it will be in the way. We are trying to only bring our backpacks. (We are not backpackers, just like to travel light)
