5 Day Itinerary May 2013

I am having a terrible time planning our itinerary.  I thought I would post it here to get some help hopefully. :)  It is myself, my mom, and my 2 daughters, 16 & 9.  We are visiting London beforehand and will be arriving in Dublin by ferry on a Tuesday about 5:30 pm so nothing but checking into our hotel and dinner that night.  I had originally planned 2 nights in Dublin, leaving early the 2nd morning, but the more I look at all we'd like to see in Ireland with so little time, I think we will only spend half a day there Wednesday to head for Kilkenny.  And there's where I get all mixed up.  I am really having a terrible time trying to decide how far we'll be able to drive in one day, where to stop for the night, etc. Here's the list of sites in order.  Can someone suggest where to put the breaks to stay the night?

little bit of Dublin, Kilkenny Castle, Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle big maybe, Muckross House, Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula, Cliffs of Moher, Craggaunowen Project, Bunratty Castle, fly out of Shannon Monday morning

Thanks!

Hi Welcome
Any reason you are not Flying? (Cost of Baggage and flights?) I will after last week Never Rail and Sail with Irish ferries ever again. To rail and sail with Stena Line you need to book from a UK mainline station too Dublin Connelly. Are you planning on hiring a car?..... That's travel out of the way.

5 days with Dublin entry and exit will not be long enough for All your wish list especially with 2 nights in Dublin to start and one needed at the end to finish?

will come back later to continue...

Wowthats a big list for only 5 days. Something has to go off your list. If you can cut the ½ day in Dublin and Kilkenny Castle, I can see the rest of the list doable in 5 days.

Two things to keep in mind, in May the days are long, 15 hours the beginning of May and 17 hours the end of May (sunrise to sunset). Second, you will average 35 miles per hour on Irish roads, not the 55 miles per hour from the Irish route planner.

Keeping in mind your list, here is what I would do;

Tuesday................. Arrive Dublin, stay overnight.

Wednesday............ Leave Dublin early morning and head to the Rock of Cashel (about 3 hrs. drive)

Next, drive to Cahir Castle ( 11 miles from ROC)

Next drive to Killarney (about 2&½ hrs. drive)

                              Stay the night in Killarney

Thursday............... Take a local tour bus to Dingle (all day trip)

                              Stay the night in Killarney

Friday.................... Take a local tour bus around the Ring of Kerry (all day trip)

                               Stay the night in Killarney

Saturday................ Visit Muckross House and Traditional Farms, TOUR Ross Castle (not on your list)

                              Stay the night in Killarney

Sunday................. Head north stopping at Bunratty Castle, then on to the Cliffs of Moher and

                             Craggaunowen (near Quin, Co. Clare)

Stay the night near Shannon, possibly Ennis, which is 20 minutes north of Shannon.

Monday................  Fly out of Shannon

So, if you give up your ½ day in Dublin and Kilkenny Castle you can work out an itinerary with everything else added. Go to

www.routes.aaireland.ie to plan your route from place to place in MILES and remember the 35 mile per hour rule. If you still want time in Dublin you could subtract one day in Killarney. I would give up the ROK, but not Dingle. Kilkenny is just too far out of the way on this trip.

Back again...

If you opt for Stena Line crossing you get into Dublin Port Stena Terminal at 5 mins past 5. You get a Bus Transfer to Bussarus or a cab to your Hotel.

Day 2 Wednesday, Hopper Bus tour of Dublin

Day 3 Thursday, Car hire and drive to Kilkenny sight see and overnight Cahir/Cashel

Day 4 Friday, Off to Killarney, Muckross, National park, gap of Dunloe

Day 5 Saturday, Drive round the Dingle peninsular and over the Connor pass, overnight Ennis.

Day 6 Sunday, Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty, Craggaunowen Project overnight Ennis

Day 7 Monday, Fly out.

had clearly miss read yesterday morning, but it is still a very tight fit.

1sttimetravler,

Welcome to my forum. Thanks to Judy and Tony for starting you off with a couple of plans. Hopefully, you will get to extend a little more than 5 days. If you will only have 5 days you will have to decide what areas are more important to you. As with everyone traveling to Ireland, there is never enough time to complete a long "must see" list. You will have a much better time if you delete at least one area and concentrate on enjoying the others rather than doing "drive by sightseeing" where you speed past and wave at the various sites. Take time to actually see them.

Let us know how else we can help you fine-tune.

Michele
