Clonmel

I know that Clonmel is close to Cashel, and was wondering if it would make sense to stay there for one night instead of Cashel, seeing the Rock of Cashel on the way there.  Has anyone stayed in Clonmel?  From what I have read, it sounds like a nice town.

Can anyone compare the two towns (as far a pubs, restaurants, shops) for a one night stay? I realize that Clonmel is much larger.

Thanks,

Geno

Clonmel is a lot larger than Cashel and a lot less tourist focused, plenty of choice for bars and food but then so has Cashel. I have been for the Racing (horse not dog) but not stayed overnight. I might be leaning more towards Cahir which again has a good choice for the evenings, has a little tourist tilt. Have a castle stay at Carrigeen B&B.

I've not stayed in Clonmel. If you are thinking that Cashel may be too touristy for you, think again. During the day bus loads of tourists arrive to see the Rock. At night it dies down and you have the town to yourself. Cashel has more of a working town vibe than a place like Killarney. There are some excellent places to stay and some very good restaurants that I can point you to if you decide to stay there.

Cashel is on a main route up to Dublin. Since you are coming from Dingle, and want to see Cahir and Cashel, it makes sense to overnight in Cashel. Clonmel is a little more off your favored route. Cashel also gives you more options. If the weather is dreadful on one day, you could see the Rock in the morning.

Just read some things about Clonmel that sounded sort of interesting, All good points made, and I hadn't thought about the tour buses leaving at night. I am booked at Joy's and will just stay with that plan.

Thanks!

I think if you had more time for this trip you could fit in Clonmel. But as things stand it is wise to stick to your original plan. I was in Cashel for 2 days last month. I had an excellent early bird at Kearney's Castle Hotel in the pub. Bailey's is good as is Chez Hans (pricey). Cafe Hans is good but is only open for lunch.

The Bru-Boru centre might be worth a look for the evening.

Bru Boru is definitely worthwhile. However, it is very seasonal. The Joy's will be able to tell you more and whether anything is on when you will be there.

Happy to give some input. Somehow I am never in Cashel when the Bru Boru music is on. However, they do other things also. I attended a play there one night that was excellent. Nice venue. It is just around the corner from Joy's. You can walk there if something is on.

I had the best...and least expensive lunch whilst in Cashel. At the base of the Rock, just down the lane, is Granny's Kitchen. It lives up to the name! The food is filling and tasty and the welcome is warm!

Appears we have lunch now, and it also looks like we can walk to just about anywhere from Joys!

John J Feehans on Main St isn't a bad local if you are stuck for a drink.

Geno,

I think Joy's is about the best to be found in Cashel, conveniently located and delightful company! You can't beat that. Looks like Tony has you sussed for a Pint...so you are all about set!
