When I go Ireland in March it will be the fifth trip I have made there, but it will serve as the first time that I have done so without direct flights. That being said, what are the ramifications of purchasing spirits at the Duty Free shop at the Dublin Airport? With the direct flights, they always packaged them at duty free, taped it shut, handed them to you, and you were allowed to take onto the aircraft as a carry-on.
This time I will be changing planes in the U.S. before I land at my home airport. Will I be able to carry something like that on the second plane?
I imagine the answer would be yes as you will already have cleared U.S. Customs & you will already be beyond Security for your connecting flight. just in case check with http://www.tsa.gov/ and your Airline, I have found the Airlines are pretty quick with answers through email.
The only problem I can think of is if you exit from the secure area when making your connection and have to go through security again. Then someone else will be enjoying your spirits.
On my flight from New Zealand to Pittsburgh we connected in LA. Their international terminal is in a seperate building from their other terminals and we had to be reinspected by security when we got to the other terminal. I wouldn't recommend doing it as a carry on. Even if you check ahead of time with the airport you are to fly into, the airline could always change the connection on you. I've had that done to me before.
Here is an idea. If you have enough time at your connecting airport, have one of your checked bags claimed at your connecting airport. Pack your spirits (with plenty of bubble wrap) in that bag and recheck it in to your final destination. That's better than having it confiscated by security.
