We are staying at Eliza Lodge in Dublin. It is in the Temple Bar area. Which location should we pick up a rental car when we are heading out of town. We will be heading South to Kilkenny. Also do you have a suggestion on a car for four of us. We would like to go as small as possible, with each one of us packing as light as possible. We will have the car for 9 days.
Depends on your car rental company. Some have city center locations and others don't. Generally it is best not to try and drive on the left in Dublin with its confusing one-way streets, on the left with lots of traffic. Most people go to the airport to pick up their car. From there they can hop on the motorway.
For four people you need at least a mid-size car. You can look at the online sites and also call to ask the car companies what they would recommend. Much will depend on luggage.
Why go as small as possible with a car 2" each side outside makes no difference on the road but can add a lot in the ****pit. There are some awful little sheds being rented out in the smaller end rentals. 6'2", 200+lb I might not be typical but I need room and comfort not a cheap dinky toy.

Two rules for Ireland, Take your time & bring a sense of humour
Have driven in Ireland 4 times in 6 years. Once in a compact (2 adults) and 3 times in a mid-size (4 adults) No trouble with luggage fitting, altho with 4 and packing light the boot(trunk) was full. As for the size difference...I stressed about it, but like Tony indicated..it didn't seem like a dramatic difference. I agree that creature comfort is important, although our compact for 2 was comfortable enuf....but we are not 200tlbs! Hertz has always been good about sizing a car for 4 adults/luggage in our experience, however, we had good luck with our mid-size ford hatchback from Auto Europe too! Seems like rental cars are the biggest "cat-in-the-sack" part of any Ireland trip....Good luck! I agree....don't drive in Dublin...the airport option would be much less stressful.
