My wife and I are starting to plan our second trip to Ireland. One of the lessons I learned on our first trip is that the driver of the rental car doesn't get to see as much as the passengers do, since the driver is concentrating on the narrow road, shifting with the wrong hand, checking the map, watching for road signs, trying to remember which side of the road to drive on, etc.
(My family swears they had awesome views as we drove over Connor Pass during our visit to the Dingle Peninsula, but all I can remember seeing is the oncoming traffic on a one-lane, winding mountain road).
This trip we will still be renting a car, but I want to - whenever possible - take one day trips on tour buses (motor coaches) so I will finally get to see some of the beautiful Irish countryside. We will definately be doing this on a Ring of Kerry tour out of Killarney. We've decided that we would love to visit the Marian Shrine at Knock, but haven't been able to locate any day trips out of Galway or even Dublin. Unfortunately this might be one that will require driving the car from Galway and perhaps staying the night along the way.
Does anyone have any info on day trips to Knock from Galway?
You've pretty much confirmed for me that the Knock excursion from Galway will be in the rental car rather than a tour bus.
And congrats on the thousands of driving miles in Ireland. I'm only in the mid hundreds myself but I'm sure my comfort level will increase with time and experience driving the Irish roads.
On our last trip we found a great deal for a week at a gorgeous self-catering thatched-roof cottage near Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, but it required long daily drives to get to all of the places that we wanted to visit. We were spending sometimes eight hours or more in the car each day, usually arriving back at the cottage well after dark and totally exausted. (It didn't help that our cottage was located at the end of a mile-long dirt road just barely wide enough for the car, with hedges on one side and a rock wall on the other. We often wondered what we would do if we encountered another vehicle going in the opposite direction as there were no lay-bys.)
Unfortunately the stress and fatigue of three of us being cooped up in the car all day caused more than a couple of nasty squabbles.
On our next trip we're planning to stay in B&B's in each of the areas we want to visit, so that should cut way back on the long drives to-and-from the areas we want to see. A little more expensive, but it will allow us much more time for exploring, relaxing, and just hanging out in the pub with some of the nicest people on earth.
Thanks for the info!

I don't know of any Tour companies working out of Galway that go exclusively to Knock -- though there ARE regular (hourly) Inter-City buses that do. Info here:
If it were me, I would drive. Galway to Knock is 45 miles / 70 Km on the N17. It is good road -- mostly all dual-carriageway. The town itself is small, with ample free parking. My wife's cousins live near Cork city and FREQUENTLY do 'Day Trips' to Knock -- though that seems a TAD much, by my personal standards. The views are nice, but not spectacular.
I've driven THOUSANDS of miles in Ireland and I get to see the scenery just fine.
Maybe I'm less uncomfortable than you
Or -- MAYBE, It might explain SOME of the reason why my wife is a rather NERVOUS traveler?????
Seriously, though, As Irish drives go, Galway to Knock is almost as easy as it gets.
