Wicklow town

Michele do you have a recommendation of a B&B in Wicklow town as I don't see it in your book.

No, sorry I don't have one in Wicklow town. The nearest would be in Newtownmountkennedy (now that is a mouthfull!). biggrin It is just a little north of Wicklow. Park View Hotel.

THough not in Wicklow town proper, Drom Ard is only approx 2kms from City Centre. Catherine Doyle is a wonderful hostess.

That is where I stayed Bit.  A real nice place with a good view of the town and the sea from her deck.  Real close to town taking that back road from the B&B.  I liked that place when we were there a few years ago.

Riverlodge B&B or Grand Hotel would be my suggestion, The Bridge Tavern has not long re-opened and is apparently as good as the old place for food music and craic also now has accommodation. Make sure to call into the Gaol, Gramps had a room there for a while 90 odd yrs ago.

That's an early stage in a long tail and how "The Brits" reopened the Gaol to keep a few "Loyal Irish" between the war and Independence. Small incident after the Black &Tan's burning his Cottage Gramps had a colourful life and apparently a few different names from 1902 to 1968.

I'll never forget talking to an old farmer once out in the countryside in Ireland. At one point in the conversation he pointed to a nearby field and said quite matter of factly, "That's where my brother was working when the Black and Tans drove by and killed him." They shot him dead for target practice. The past may be the past but it is not all that distant in Ireland.

I remember my mother telling of her brother at age 14 being taken outside their cottage and lined up against the wall. But, by the grace of God they let him go. The Black and Tans really terrorized the Irish families in those days. That would have been around 1920.

Two of my Gran's cousin... boy and girl...walking home from school...not more than 200 yards from their front gate...just outside Newry.... B&T coming down the road in a vehicle...children moved to get out of their way...They purposely swerved and hit them...ran over the boy's leg...crippling him for life...he was 10...girl was snatched up...dumped outta the truck miles down the road...battered, bruised, hysterical...she was 12...she never spoke of what happened... That would have been around that same time frame, mid 20s....

It was an ugly time...and in some pockets, it still is
