And Now -- For Something TOTALLY Different ...In Travel Plans

So, I've already established the plans for our Family Gathering from 18-28 June.  We'll base in Mourne Abbey until the morning of  27 June (Thursday) and then make our way to an overnight at the Dublin Airport Premier Inn.  On the morning of Friday, 28 June, we'll drop the kids and kidlets at the airport, return the van, Pick Up the mid-sized car and head North.

Here's the TENATIVE Plan:

Friday: Drive Dublin Airport to Premier Inn in Lisburn -- via a drive around the Ards.  I plan to pass through Stranford - Portaferry then mostly encircle Strangford Lough, to Mahee Island and visit the Round Tower at Nendrum.  From there we'll head to the hotel for One night, via the Round Tower at Drumbo.  Google Maps says 159 Miles and 4 hours and 30 minutes.  I expect it will be at, or a bit more than 8 hours, with stops and meals and breaks.

Saturday: Drive from Lisburn to Gweedore, Donegal, via Antrim ( with stops to visit Ram's Island and Antrim Round Towers) and then a cross country, inland meander via Strabane and Letterkenny.  Google Maps: 131 miles 3 hours 18 minutes.  While here, visit Glenveagh -- The Mrs, NIXED a Ferry out to Tory Island (Round Tower) cry  cry  cry

Gweedore to Enniskillen via a coastal & inland route to Glenties,Donegal Town, and Ballyshannon.  There, we'll follow the West bank of Lough Melvin, cross over into Fermanagh and follow the Eastern shore of Lough Macnean Upper, to Blacklion and then follow the A4 along the North Shore of Lough Macnean Lower, into Fermanagh.  Google Maps:  110 miles and 3 hours.  While there I plan to visit Devenish Island and White Island.

Drive from Enniskillen to Clifden, via Roscommon Town, Oran Round Tower, Castlerea, Ballyhaunis, Knock, Cong and Maam Cross.  Google Map:168 miles and 4 hous 17 minutes.  Mostly interested in seeing Clifden, Roundstone and driving the coast.

Drive from Clifden to Mountshannon via the Galway coast road, to Roscam Round Tower (between Galway and Oranmore) then detouring through the Burren via Kinvara and Ballyvaughn, Kilinaboy Round Tower (to replace lost photos), Corofin, and Gort (along Lough Bunny).  While there, visit Iniscealtra (Holy Island).  Google Maps:  164 miles and 4 hours 24 minutes.

Saturday:  Drive from Mounshannon to the Cousin's (near Cork City)  via Birr, Roscrea (Round Tower)and Cashel.

Sunday:    Drive to Dublin Airport Premier Inn.

Monday:    Return car and fly home

SO -- my delemma is How to Break it up.  We arrive Donegal on Saturday afternoon / evening and need to depart Mountshannon on the Following Saturday morning.  MY thought was Sunday / Monday in Eniskillen, Tuesday/Wednesday in Clifden and Thursday / Friday in Mountshannon.  That gives 'Short Shift' to Donegal, but we've visited the Inishowen AND Clencollumbkille / Killybegs / Donegal Town, before ... confuse

In order to get to Eniskillen and visit BOTH Devenish and White Islands, I pretty much NEED two nights there.

It will take the day, just to make it from Enniskillen to Clifden -- So, I would think I need two nights there, as well.  Likewise, in order to visit Holy Island, I'll pretty much NEED a second night there, too.

So, do a do an 'over-nighter near Glenveagh -- Or, do I drop the night from Donegal and 'ADD' it in, somewhere else?

Ideas?  Suggestions?  Lodging Rec's?

Bob

Are you taking the main road or the Portaferry ferry? I assume you are taking the direct route and not the coastal route up to the Ards Peninsula?

Lisburn is very near Hillsborough. Have you been there before?

Are you spending a couple of days in Co. Donegal? You will need most of a day for Glenveagh.

Just trying to get my head around this one. confuse

Michele -- Don't feel like you're alone.  I've been struggling with this for a while.  I guess what I'm looking for is validation, advice and suggestions ...

And yes ... You Hit the Nail On the Head ... I'm SHORT about 2-3 days!  What's compounding this, is that IF the Cousins decide that they want to do something with us during that time, we will likely scrap the entire plan!  Makes it nearly impossible.  cry cry

I'm leaning toward dropping the Donegal portion -- since we REALLY don't have enough time to dedicate to the area AND we'll need to return, some day, to make our way out to Tory Island.  Also, I'm finding it difficult to find accommodation anywhere beyond Letterkenny.  If we do this, I might add that night BACK in at the END and spend the Friday night near the Cousins ...

I WAS planning to do the Portaferry route around the peninsula, but we will take the more direct, inland route from Newry to Strangford.  We did the coast section, this past October.  We'll have an early start, that day and be well-rested.  It was also the reason I chose the Lisburn Premier Inn -- so we wouldn't feel bad about arriving late.  The Rams Island Ferry is operated by volunteers. -- In June, it only runs on Saturdays -- at 12:30.  If we rise early that day, I MIGHT shoot up to Antrim for my photo op, circle back for the excursion and then head semi-directly to Enniskillen.

The Enniskillen to Clifden drive is unduly complicated by my addition of Roscommon (for Oran Round Tower) and my wife's insistence to return to Knock.  We've spent a goodly amount of time in Connemarra over the years -- but, oddly enough, have never visited either Clifden or Roundstone.  Likewise, we've driven the Lough Derg drive (along the West Coast, enroute to Clonmacnoice and Athlone) but haven't ever been to Birr, or Roscrea.

Well, let's start to break this down and see how to fill in the blanks.

Friday: Dublin to Lisburn via Ards Peninsula * This is doable but you are right about getting into Lisburn late considering all your stops, etc. From Newry there are a couple of different approaches. I think I would take the road through Hilltown and the Mountains of Mourne. It is a pretty straight shot and not much traffic although a good secondary road. Nice views from up there too. Might be best to avoid getting sucked into Belfast by taking smaller roads rather than motorways.

You lost me now. Do you only have another 3 days? Or do you have another week?

Michele --

The Friday for the Ards is 28 June.  We need to be in Dublin the evening of 7 July -- a Sunday.

If I 'drop' Donegal, my thought was 2 nights each, in Enniskillen, Clifden, Mountshannon and somewhere near the Cousins in East Cork.  My indecision stems from my reluctance to miss Donegal, seeing as we are so close ...

I'm begining to sound like a Newbie!  biggrin   aww   biggrin

Bob,

It is always more difficult to plan your own itinerary than to offer advice on someone else's. I plan itineraries for people all the time yet when it comes to my own, things get complicated. I always want to cover more ground than I have time for even if I have a month in Ireland. I feel your pain! evileye

I guess you need to decide on what is more important and cut out one stop such as Donegal. We need to take our own advice that "less is more" and you won't miss what you don't see. Plus, there is always another trip on the horizon. Talk to your wife and get her input.

When is your book on Irish round towers coming out? wink Or at least an article. I would love to have you do one for my Blog.

Michele -- Part of the reason for the later part of the trip is to resume my Tower Quest.  Expect to add 8 more, this trip and MAYBE more. Still have 16 ??? to go, but I might be in a position to 'work up' a 'wee scrap' for you, after we return ...

Now have pre-paid, confirmed booking at Lisburn's Premier Inn on 28 June.  Nights of 29&30 June I secured Dromard House, in Eniskillen (Abocurragh wasn't available --

Have an inquiry in to Sea Mist House, in Clifden, for the nights of 1&2 July and just received confirmation for nights of 3&4 July, at Hawthorne Lodge, in Mountshannon.

That leaves nights of 5&6 July to be spent near the Cousins -- or, if they are unavailable, then perhaps Kilkenny ( 4 MORE Round Towers!!) -- unbooked.

Had already pre-booked our 7 July / Last night at the Dublin Airport Premier Inn.

Bob,

Sounds like things are coming together. Now you just need a few more accommodation confirmations. Last time I was in Lisburn they were building the Premier Inn there. It is outside town in the Sprucefield shopping area. There is a coffee shop nearby with free Internet access. Can't think of the name of it at the moment. I do remember that they had Thornton's caramel shortcakes in the Sainsbury supermarket. Yum!

If I find them on sale for 99p, I'll try to remember to pick you up a few ...

After a week waiting for a response from Sea Mist House, I booked us into Al**** and Brown Hotel for 1-3 July.  A little pricier, but I like the in-town location.  They have a Writer's Workshop  on offer, but it begins on 30 June and costs 499 Euro, so I'll NOT be doing that ...

Good to know, Tony.  Anything going on in Clifden, or nearby, those two days?  I see that I managed to miss the Rugby set for the following weekend.

Likewise, any doings around the Lough, the next two nights, whilst we are in Mountshannon?  Other than my Round Tower at Inishcealtra (and the one in Roscrea) I really don't have any specific agenda ...

Off hand Bob I think you are a week early in Clifden for about anything and you will possibly catch the Brian Ború festival in Killaloe which starts the 4th but just miss the water rally in Mountshannon that starts on the 6th,
will have a look and get back to you later.

Tony -- Any chance of luring you down, off the mountain, to Mountshannon, or thereabouts, during our two nights/days on Lough Derg??

I'll try to 'Check In', from time to time, as opportunity arises ...

Checking in, after a LONG day, from Enniskillen -- taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi at our B&B at Dromard House.

Our time with the kids and kidlets went well -- despite THEIR horrific flight problems via USAIR (Delayed landing in Charlotte, due to weather -- which APPARENTLY was not so severe that the DUB flight could not take off -- confuse confuse confuse).  This necessitated an over-night hotel stay (USAIR gave them a DISCOUNT voucher!!! -- so, it still cost them $60), followed by a morning flight to Boston (and a rainy, 8 hour lay-over), and terminated with an Aer Lingus flight into Dublin -- on Wednesday morning -- one, whole day late ...

Insult to injury, one of their two checked bags DISAPPEARED -- and failed to reappear, until the morning of 27 June -- just in time to fly BACK to the US.

Ah, well ... The kidlets LOVED Ivy Bridge Lodge, David and the critters -- particularly the two ponies that they had the opportunity to ride.

Other highlights included the Kerry Bog Village, Kissane Sheep Farm, the Gap of Dunloe and time spent with the Cousins.

On the way to the Dublin, on Thursday, we stopped in Cashel, for lunch and in Kildare, where we climbed the Round Tower.

Friday AM, after dropping off the family at the airport (To news of an announced, 1.5 hour flight delay, 'Due to Traffic', the wife and I set out for the North, to 'Iffy' weather ...

Visited Nendrum AND Drumbo Round Towers and toured the Northern half of the Ards and STILL arrived in Lisburn -- before 5 PM.  Saturday, we FAILED in our attempt to visit Ram's Island -- as the ferry only operates on a PRE-BOOKING basis ...  Day started iffy, but improved, as it progressed and we made our way West.

DID see Antrim's Round Tower, though.  Arrived in Enniskillen early enough to do some sight-seeing, too:  Monea Castle and some nice views of Lower Lough Erne and the Countryside.

Today started nasty, but improved in the afternoon.  Visited White Island in steady rain and toured Castle Archdale under dry-ish, but dark skies. Took the MV Kestrel cruise (1.5 hours, but includes 45 minutes on Devenish Island).  Climbed my SECOND Round Tower!

About 4 PM, we set out on a scenic drive that included visits to Portora Castle, Tully Castle and Lough Navar Forest Scenic Drive.

Tomorrow, it is on to Oran Round Tower (a stump), just outside of Roscommon Town, followed by a 'ZIG' to Knock and then on to Clifden, via Cong ...

Bob,

Thanks for checking in from Ireland and for the quick synopsis of your trip so far. Sorry to hear about the glitches with flights and luggage. Sounds like you are getting your "fix" of round towers so far. Looking forward to more on your return. And of course lots of photos!

Checking in again -- This time from Mountshannon.  Arrived after another long day, driving from Clifden -- via Roscam, Galway (Round Tower), Seir Kieran, Weatmeath (Round Tower) and Roscrea, Tipperary (Round Tower)!  Also spent a GOODLY amount of time at Celtic Crystal, were we were treated to a Grand Tour AND a cutting demonstration, by Sean.

I was shown a one-of-a-kind, Round Tower vase, cut by Sean that is to be shown next week, in Brussels -- after which, Sean will sign it and it will be shipped to my home, in Florida!   Yeah, Me! :cheer:

It wasn't even particularly pricey.  biggrin  confuse biggrin

Tomorrow, I'll ring up Ger Madden and make my way to Holy Island for another Round Tower.  That should be IT -- for THIS trip -- A total of EIGHT (8) new ones!

Weather was fairly nasty on Tuesday, but improved, late in the day.  Wednesday was dull, but MOSTLY dry.  Tomorrow is predicted to be cool, with scattered showers -- But, there-after, warm (70-72) and only partly cloudy ...

Bob,

Just last night, I received a wonderful email from David. He wanted to let me know what a delightful family you all were.

I am glad that you and the family enjoyed your stay at "my" thatchie. biggrinwinkbiggrin

Glad to see that you are still managing to get in your Round Tower time. I, too, am looking forward to seeing a photograph of your Round Tower vase.

Bit -- About the only two things that the grands STILL talk about is the ride through the Gap of Dunloe and the two ponies (and dogs) at Ivy Bridge.  David was wonderful with them -- giving each a riding lesson --

We may have to compete for Lodge time NEXT year!

Tony -- Dunno how I messed up the Tesco number???? The Vodaphone had a fairly weak signal in Mountshannon, but it WAS working... Unfortunately, the weather on Thurs started rather dodgy and Ger suggested we wait an hour or two, to see if it would clear.  We drove down to the East Clare Heritage Center, to 'Kill' the time and spent about 2 hours or so, inside the old, stone church, chatting with the three delightful ladies working there.  That must be where we lost the service.  After, with BLUE skies and sun, we spent an hour on the Holy Isle and caught the last tour of the day at the Portumna Work House.  THAT was well worth a visit -- even though it is very much a work-in-progress...

As you said, perhaps NEXT visit ... ??? ...
