Need some ideas for trip from Tobercurry to Adare

Thanks for the suggestions. My hubby's great grandmother came from Culdaly, Aclare so we are spending a morning finding the church she was baptized in as well as the Abbey she grew up in and hopefully locate a gravestone that the family has been trying to find for years of his great great grandmother.  That's why we are staying around there.  We are traveling from Dublin to Tubber as you call it, the day after we arrive in Ireland (the 8th). Will take our time driving there that day to see some sights along the way. We thought we'd spend the morning in Aclare/Tubbercurry area on the 9th and the afternoon exploring some sights around Sligo. We would have one more free day to explore around Sligo or drive to the coast (maybe Westport area?) for a day trip.  Do you think it better to do two nights instead and perhaps use that 3rd day/night (the 10th) in Galway area?  That way we would be close to Derryglassaun (photo stop more than anything) and could drive to Cliffs of Moher on the 11th on way to Adare.  We have all those days in Adare to do day trips, too.

My family of four (incl. 2 kids ages 14 and 12) will be in Ireland July 7-17.  We are doing one night in Dublin, 3 nights in Tobercurry at a B & B and then driving to Adare where we will be for 6 nights before flying out of Shannon.  We will be driving to Adare on the 11th and would love some suggestions of stops along the way to make it interesting.  My husband's great grandfather came from Derryglassaun, Galway so we are stopping there on way to Adare but that's all we know so far.

Thanks for any suggestions.

- Laura

Much as I love Tubber (Grandfathers home town) I am not sure 3 nights is deserved and there is a lot between there and Adare Like Mayo, Galway and Clare. Perhaps a couple of nights in Westport and a night in or around Fanore (great beach) on the coast between Ballyvaughan and Doolin.

Derryglassaun is a bit of a detour being east of Galway and if I could suggest that you call into there on the way to Westport (if you take that option)

The old map might be of some use? http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,535253,810024,4,1  (We might even be related in some far distant way)  Benada Abbey is about the closest I can Think of  http://mairegarvey.com/lectures/Benada%20Abbey.html   http://www.sligoheritage.com/archbenada.htm

There is a fair bit see using the area as a base (most any area in Ireland for that matter) The Ciede Fields,  Bloacksod,  Downpatrick Head and the rest of the North Mayo coastline,  Achill would be a full days trip. Foxford Woolen Mills,  Boyle and into Roscommon for the Arigna Mines Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs

Basically you could spend weeks around there (I used to as a small child) so just disregard my earlier comments which were aimed towards a general rather than connected questioner.  But yes I would still split the journey between there and Adare but where?

Derryglassaun would be a left turn off the N17 at Tuam towards Athenry  that's an easy turn to miss, signed Dublin takes you through a Housing complex (not a pretty one) then past the Boárd Mona turf fields on the R347. left turn again for Monivier on the R339 through there about 3 miles to just before Menlough.  http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,559918,741666,5,0 (even smaller Townland than ours here in Moyglass).

Athenry, Galway, perhaps down in Loughrea would be an option for the night.

If looking for something to do around Tubber, not far away in Gurteen (small village) is the Coleman Music Center. It features a celebration of Traditional Irish Music, Culture, and Heritage, as expressed in in the South Sligo Stlye of music played by Michael Coleman, and other musicians of his time. The center has an active listening center, archives, books, CDs, Instruments, and DVDs. Also has a state of the art event center where you can attend concerts featuring Traditional Irish Music. You can contact them at: info@colemanirishmusic.com for a schedule of events. A good way to spend a few hours or half a day if the weather is down.

At the time we were there a few years ago, we found a couple of the best sessions we ever attended. Back then it was on a Mon & Tues night. The Coleman center could advise about the current schedule for Traditional music in the Gurteen pubs.

Do you have a self-catering rental in Adare? I have some suggestions for Galway lodgings here: http://www.irelandyes.com/lodgings.html

Sligo is a beautiful area that is bypassed by many tourists who have limited time in Ireland. The kids might enjoy Parke's Castle and a boat ride on the lake. There is surfing at Strandhill or you can climb to the top of Knocknarea. There are lovely drives around the lakes. You could go out to Rosses Point or even drive to Coney Island.

Good luck with your ancestry search.

Thanks to Tony and Dan for your replies.  Tony..I've written to the Sisters of Charity and we should be receiving information soon on her time at Benada Abbey - both for school and living there for some years after her mother died and before she came to the US.  I know the Abbey is now owned privately (so I'm told) but am hoping to see it anyway.  I really wanted my husband and kids to have a sense of connection to their Irish roots -the McNulty side in Sligo and the Quinn side in Galway.  I wish we had more time in both places but alas, its never enough time to see everything we want.  Guess that's why so many people on these boards are on their umpteenth trip over.

Still not sure whether to stay the 3rd night in Sligo or head to Galway.  My husband would like to stay in Galway area one night I think so am hunting down B&B's for a probable stay on the 10th. Trying to squeeze things in without overloading the kids.

Good tip re: the Coleman Music Center.  I will check it out.  My son really wants to see a hurling or Gaelic football game but I thought we might try and do that while in Adare area, as we have more time there.

Thanks for the directions..I expect to be lost several times and hope my family can keep their sense of humor throughout the missed turns and backtracking.  confuse

Call down by Mountshannon on Lough Derg we have a pair of White Tailed Sea Eagles breeding down there this year.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_BUOSmpoOQ  also consider Ailwee Caves Birds of Prey centre for a Hawk walk or possibly Dromoland Castle who also offer Hawk walks.

Michele..we are at Adare Manor in a townnhouse for the 6 nights.  Booked it as part of a package deal, otherwise I would have planned more time in Sligo/Galway/Clare area.  I tried Marless House already but they were booked for the 10th.  Knocknarea is definitely on our must list for Sligo area.  I would like to go see Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery as well.  My son likes birds of prey so I think we will go to Eagles Flying in Ballymote.  So much to see, so little time. :(  Will look into Parke's Castle too. Thanks for all the suggestions.

My son found Ailwee Caves and I think we might try that place instead of Eagles Flying, as he def wants to do a hawk walk.   Other question for those in the know:  is there a road map (out of the many found online) that you recommend over another for being really up to date?  We prob want to bring over a GPS as well.

Adare Manor also does a Hawk Walk but for some reason it costs twice as much as the Birds of Prey Center at Aillwee or Ashford Castle: http://www.adaremanor.com/falconry-hawk-walk.html It is also available at Dromoland Castle: http://www.dromoland.ie/activities-falconry.html

OSi is generally regarded as the best map http://shop.osi.ie/Shop/Products/StockedItemsWH03/PID-14003%28StockedItems%29.aspx

I don't know why is costs so much at Adare but because of it, I am looking at Ashford, Ailwee Caves, or Dromoland.  I emailed the gentleman at Dromoland who runs the falconry program to inquire about some more detail, as his website does not give too much information, including price. Hoping to hear back soon.  A big find of late..Tony Kirby's guided walk in the Burren. Looking forward to that and think the kids would enjoy it.  Still finalizing our itinerary. Is overwhelming because there is so much to do and see but realistically, one must pick and choose and just plan on returning to see more another year. I want to enjoy and appreciate this trip and not just be a typical fool trying to cram everything in.

The Hawk Walk at Aillwee is 70 euro per person. They also do birds of prey demonstrations if you don't need the "hands on" experience for 7 euro.

One good thing about self-catering for a week is you are more flexible and can pick and choose each day. If the weather is dismal one day, perhaps do it the next. Plan some rainy day activities too.

I can speak for the Birds of Prey at Ailwee...  We had my sweetie's two neices, 9 & 13,  with us.

We thoroughly enjoyed it! I was picked to be the "handler" for the Owl flight.... that was an awesome experience biggrin
