first irish adventure

Hello Michele, I consulted you a few years ago for a trip to the emerald isle, but unfortunately didn't make that trip. However, I'm looking into planning a new trip for 2007 - either late march or early fall. I know it's early, but I'd like to get started in the research phase of the trip. *This is a general rundown of what I'm hoping to see/do. Please comment.

I'll fly into Shannon, spend the first 1 or 2 nights in Limerick area as I want to attend the medieval banquet @ Bunratty Castle. I'm thinking of spending 2 or 3 days in Galway. Will the Aran islands ferry be running in late March? I'm not sure about what to do after Galway. Was thinking of spending a day or 2 at a country-ish B&B, someplace with sheep or a farm environment. Any recommendations around western coast area or close by? Will probably spend last night in Limerick or close by for Shannon departure for home. I hear about sing-a-longs at the pubs. Do these really exist? I would like to interact with the locals, enjoying a few pints. Thanks Michele, I look forward to your reply. Greg

Greg,

I'm glad to hear you are back on track and planning a trip in 2007. It is never to early to plan. How long do you think you will be in Ireland? From what you have outlined it seems like about a week. With that short amount of time you might be better off doing a short drive on your arrival day to another area and spending your last night near Shannon. You could see Bunratty Castle & Folk Park as well as a banquet on your last night. A fine send-off at the end of your trip.

The Aran Island ferries runs all year. It is the Doolin Ferry that is seasonal. Go to my "Transport" page for ferries in Ireland. You can also fly Aer Arann to the islands: http://www.aerarann.ie/

There are sing-alongs in some pubs. The Bunratty Irish Night Ceili also has them.

I know of a really great historic sheep farm outside Cashel called Dualla House: http://www.tipp.ie/bedandbreakfast/tipperary/duallahouse/dualla-house.htm

Be sure to take a good look around my website for much info on planning your trip.

Thanks Michele for your prompt reply. The Dualla House sounds great for 1-2 nights stay. Regarding the length of trip, I was aiming for a week but it could probably be stretched to 10 days maximum.

I often read about the B&B vouchers: Could you shed some light on what these are and how they are obtained? If it would be appropriate for Dualla House, where would I purchase them - from a travel agent? I don't plan to drive on this trip - so I will rely on either buses, trains, etc. Thanks, Greg

Greg,

Vouchers are slips of paper (like tickets) that you purchase from a travel agent. You hand them over to the B&B owner to pay for your room instead of cash. Generally, I do not recommend getting them unless you get a fantastic price for a fly/drive/voucher package. But you have just said that you will be using public transportation. You will have many more options open to you by not getting vouchers. In fact Dualla House (and many other B&Bs) do not accept them. Vouchers limit where you can stay. Also, if you are traveling alone you will have to pay a single supplement and that would be in addition to a voucher. I don't think they would be best for your circumstances.
