For some time I have been unable to find the Discount card and other information on the Shannon Region .. I now know why.. Thanks to Facebook .. The following statement was made a couple of weeks ago and I clearly missed all official announcements .
"To our loyal Facebook Followers,
As you may already know Irelands Shannon Region Facebook Page is managed by Shannon Development; the regional tourism authority for the Shannon Region. In May 2012 the Government decided to merge a restructured Shannon Development with the new Shannon Airport company and transfer the companys tourism remit, and related tourism staff, to Fáilte Ireland. The tourism transfer took effect from 1st June 2013.
This decision will enable the region to prosper and grow through the development and growth of the new restructured Shannon Airport. Irelands Shannon Region Facebook followers can continue to get updates on the Region, major events and things to do around the country, from discoverireland.ie and Shannon Airport
Wed like to take this opportunity to thank our Facebook family for all your loyalty and friendship over the years.
Slán agus beannacht leat,
Irelands Shannon Region "
As we all know Fáilte Ireland will continue to be Fáilte Ireland and the cynical amongst us might just believe that the Discover Ireland Arm will promote what it decides to promote so Loop Head and The Cliffs of Moher etc will continue to get the buzz the other 90% of what was the Shannon region?? Hopefully Fáilte Ireland will get their act in gear, personally I won't be holding my breath.
I would like to Thank the Shannon Region team for all they have done promoting tourism in the area over the past years

Shannon was the last holdout of regional tourist boards. It'll be interesting to see how things play out. Most North American visitors probably won't notice the difference... only the most diligent travel planners wander off the major resources when organizing their trip (hats off to those who visit this forum... you are getting exposed to a lot more information).
Hopefully, now that Shannon Airport has control of its future, they can make decisions that will attract more commercial flights and other business that will in turn help tourism in the region.
The other "loose end" is Shannon Heritage (the folks who run Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, King John's Castle, Craggaunowen, Knappogue Castle & Walled Garden, Dunguaire Castle, and... this might come as a surprise... Malahide Castle & Gardens). They used to be under Shannon Development... now things have been shaken up and although their future is secure, their budget and management could see changes now that they have a new "boss."
Thanks Tony. Bord Failte/Tourism Ireland has been consolidating for some time. Personally, I think having the locals in charge in each area is a better idea since they promote their own product with zeal that is often absent from the big guys who are more like bean counters. But that is the way of the world lately.
I know I'm a bit late to this topic, but it's always been a sore spot to me that the middle of the country has been vastly overlooked when it comes to tourism. I was quite pleased with the Shannon Region tourism promotion and am sad to see that it has been 'absorbed.'
The Shannon Region and Midlands have a lot to offer. Some of our favorite places in Ireland are found there. As has been previously stated, I doubt that Failte Ireland will promote this area of the country in the same way. Very sad!
Does anyone have any or know the source of any hard copy information leaflets from the old "Irelands Shannon Region". This was taken over by Failte Ireland back in June? All the web based stuff, even the facebook page has gone and lets face it FI's interests fall far from promoting the area in such a clear, informed and informative fashion.
Might be a winter project for me (or someone else?) if enough of the old stuff can be salvaged. My bookmarks are gone along with much of my memory even to the extent of the outer boundaries in Limerick, Tipperary, Offaly, and Galway, pretty sure all of Clare was included.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I have some old leaflets and a magazine about the Shannon Region. I can send them to you if you like. Most of the items are from 2007.
I have a ton of "stuff". My husband often says I have more brochures, etc. than Tourism Ireland does. I really need to do a clean out. When I do I will PM you and see if I can send you a package of info.
Many Thanks .. I will run though and print out some of the above..The Discover Ireland, DI, (duff information) is the default redirect for about 70% of the bookmarks on my old laptop and whilst useful if you know what you are looking for and then if there is anything when you have spent 1/2 an hour rooting in case youve missed something Heritage Ireland is great for Heritage Ireland sites but there is a load of stuff just Gone
Drive around the area and massive signs tell you you are in the "Shannon Region" I just wonder how long these will remain?
I have emailed a couple of the contacts from the Shannon Development site and await an answer from them . Unfortunately I am more a Cartographer than a Blogger, but at least if I can map things out as a starting point it might be something..

Yes, I know that most of the old links we had redirect to the TI sites. That's when to use the Wayback Machine. Will let you know if I find anything of use in print in my old files. You never know. I just threw out some 20 year old magazines.
