6adults and 2kids...van rental vs. car hire

We are a family of 6 adults and 2 children (ages 3 months to 62) traveling Ireland late September.  We have accommodations booked... First night in Dublin, 3 nights in Kinsale, 3 nights in Dingle, back to Dublin (Malahide) the last night. I had planned on renting a van for transport with stops along our way, but booking some tours separately so we can all enjoy and not be stressed With driving. (A few type A personalities so stress definitely possible.)   As I was looking into private tours for certain days, I started thinking maybe a better option would be to hire a private driver/ tour to get us from one locale to the next and not rent a van at all. I don't think I want to hire a private driver for the whole trip, but if we got one from Dublin to Kinsale, touring the Wicklows, Kilkenny, etc on the way, then do our own thing while in Kinsale.  Then hire another driver/tour from Kinsale to Dingle, and finally get us from Dingle back to Dublin.  My husband and I had a wonderful trip to Ireland 10 years ago (rented a car and drove)so know the ropes somewhat, but the idea of us renting a van for this large group and trying to drive and tour seems very stressful. We don't want to be the primary drivers and who should be drivers, and how will the van do on narrow winding roads, etc. ,etc. we want this to be as stress free as is possible with this type of group.  Does this sound feasible? Can we easily get day trips at the last minute from Kinsale and Dingle for those that want to go? Your input would be greatly appreciated!!!

I would not count on day trips at the last moment from Kinsale and Dingle, especially in late September. Many tours operate during the tourist season and die down once the tourists are scarce. Why stay open if you will have no business?

There are a couple of bases that are good year-round places to pick up day tours. But Dingle and Kinsale are not them.

Have you thought of renting two cars? You could keep in touch by cell phone and have your daily itinerary mapped out for each car. If one group wanted to do something different, that would be an option not available with a van. Also, renting a van large enough for 8 people plus luggage does not seem realistic. If you want all people in one vehicle you probably want to rent a mini-bus and driver.

You do have some options but choose carefully at the end of September.

private drivers cost upwards of E200 per day and as you can get between main spots on public transport the freedom to get around these places will not as Michelle has pointed out Exist. Kinsale links to Cork and Dingle Links to Tralee (3 times a day)

I recently had a lengthy phone conversation with Conn at easytourireland.com about this very subject. His company has a franchise agreement with Hertz. He is very knowledgeable about Ireland in general, and rental vehicles in particular. Unfortunately, (with Hertz anyway) the largest van available is considered an 8-9 passenger van. He indicated that 6 adults with "normal" luggage would be optimal. Seven may work, but if you get up to 8, you must be very careful about the amount of luggage you have along or you could be in for difficulty. Another company with a similar offering using Hertz is journeythroughireland.com. We have used them twice and no problems, no surprises.

As for my experience, we did rent a larger van, supposedly a 9 passenger in Glasgow Scotland last Oct. It was a diesel automatic on a mercedes chasis. There were 5 adults, and we would have fit comfortably in a 7 passenger van, the next size down that we had requested, but we were upgraded to the larger van for no extra charge. In that van, with our volume of luggage, I think 7 adults would have been the max. I was worried about driving the larger vehilcle on the wee roads of Scotland, but had no scrapes & not even any close-calls! Roads in Ireland would be similar in width, as I have driven over most of Ireland in 4 different trips.

My advice, if you try to go with one vehicle: you will need to be creative in packing-probably one 18"-20" main bag, and maybe one small personal bag for each adult, and try to distribute the kids clothes among the adults luggage, and plan to make the sacrifice of doing laundry often as the trade off for only having to rent one vehicle and you can save $'s by only putting one driver on the rental contract. You say the youngest is 3 months old, so car seat considerations need to be considered. Another thought is a car top luggage carrier, but do not know if that is an option on a rental vehicle, in Ireland. Might be a good question for Conn.

Good luck! Dan

Dan,

Conn used to be Journey Through Ireland(JTI)... He branched off into his own company...

We rented a 9 passenger van to transport the clan... two pre-teen girls, Grandma, FLANO's brother and his medical gear, myself and FLANO... from JTI ... a 9-Passenger Manual diesel... 9-passenger means just that ...Passengers... and not big ones...

We sat two to the front...driver & aggravator ... Two to the middle ... and two to the rear seat... and there were still complaints of crowding

I restricted the luggage down to ONE 21" duffel or soft-side luggage piece and a small backpack... as you can imagine the girls were none too happy with that restriction...

Even with those restrictions...the person in the back seat fought for space with the luggage overflow... packing the luggae area took the skills of a Tetris master...none of us were such...

Also to consider is access to the rear seat...as the middle seat sometimes doesn't move or not very far...it takes a limber and slender person sometimes to take the back row

If you are adding an infant carrier to the mix, you might be better served to go with two vehicles as that adds some bulk to the seating area...

Some forum members have used this one: http://www.corkcoachhire.com/ Contact: Jerry info@corkcoachhire.com

They loved the service, the driver and highly recommended it. The company was recommended to me by the chauffeur company that I used to deal with who closed.

Thank you all for your suggestions! Lots to consider, I know. I'm leaning toward hiring a private driver at this point. May change my mind when I see the quotes, but do any of you have a recommendations about the best companies? I have contacted Conn, Kennedy Coaches and Paddywagon. Would appreciate your opinions of these and others you would recommend. Again, thanks so much!!!!

I don't have any good rec's based upon personal experience, but ...

A good, general starting point:  http://www.bushq.com/

You might also check with Deros Tours, out of Killarney.  They USED to offer mini bus charters.
