Hello! My family and I are heading to Ireland this coming Thursday for a week. My husband is a Belfast native and hasn't been home in 4 years. Also, this will be the first time his family meets our 2 year old daughter. We tagged on to a large group of friends who are coming over for the Rose of Tralee festival, so we are flying into Shannon. We rented a car and we will be driving straight to Dublin to visit some family and then Belfast. After 2 nights in Belfast we are off to Donegal with the In-laws for vacation. We broke up our trip in the beginning so we wouldn't ever be in the car for more than 2 1/2 hours. My problem is that we were planning on leaving from Donegal to Shannon, which Google Maps says will take 5 1/2 hours! Also, we would have to drive at 3a.m. to make our 11a.m. flight. I have tried and tried to find a good spot from Falcarragh, Donegal to Shannon Airport to maybe stop and see and stay overnight...a half way point? Any suggesstions???
You are coming from the boondocks down to Shannon. Sligo is not exactly halfway but might suit you as it is on the main road. Actually, just south of Sligo you might try Castle Dargan Hotel. It is just slightly off the main road. Another option would be Knock.
Am I understanding you correctly that you would be going from the halfway point to the airport for an 11 am flight? Not a good idea. Departing then will mean being at the airport by 8 am plus you need time to turn in the car. Better to just do the marathon drive and overnight near Shannon.
Thanks for the quick reply! I'm starting to think the marathon drive might be best. We are only in Ireland a week, I was trying to give my husband as much time as I could with his family, but I am also worried about the drive with our two year old. :( Thanks for the advice.
I agree that such a long drive with a two-year-old is not ideal. But your other alternatives are less than ideal too. Other than changing things around you will have to do the long drive on your last full day in Ireland. You could stop every once in a while to let your child run around for a few minutes.
