Hi there - We will be travelling to Ireland in August for a wedding. The wedding is in Cavan on a Saturday, and we'll have to fly home from Dublin on Thursday. We are also travelling with a 2 year old. My husband and I have both been to Dublin on separate trips years ago, and really prefer to see the countryside this time more than the city. We like to enjoy the outdoors and hike.
My question is this - is that enough time to try to either go North and see Giants Causeway or go South and explore the County Cork/Kerry area? Maybe travel to just one city and stay put and just venture out for day trips (what cities are good for this). If we were able to add 2 days to the trip, does that change the asnwer?
Just looking for suggestions as to where to start and what to look into for a trip like this. The easy answer would be to stay in and around Dublin, but that's not really what we're looking for. And did I mention the 2 year old?
What a fun trip! Irish weddings are usually fantastic and go on into the wee hours of the night. You should not expect an early start on Sunday if you are taking off for the rest of your trip on that day. You might also want to arrange for a babysitter for your 2 year old.
Do you have your reservations in Cavan for the wedding? It would be very important to do that ASAP.
Since Cavan is much closer to Northern Ireland than to the southwest, I think that would make the most sense (even if you can add another couple of days). NI is a fantastic place to visit with friendly people and stunning scenery. I think you would enjoy it very much.
Let me know if I can help any more as your trip progresses.
