It's a soft morning & I will have a little time before we get moving today -- the Mrs. was up late watching a movie last night. So, a little trip reporting.

The weather pattern has been showers in the AM, with a bit of blustery wind and some clearing in the afternoon. Evenings have been settled, nice for getting out for a stroll. The morning we arrived was much the same as today, heavily overcast, and an enveloping mist on the ground. A warming cup is a must, first thing. The border crossing at Shannon was the easiest I can ever remember. We were asked if we'd been here before -- the agent could tell that we had with a quick glance at our passports -- given a welcome & ushered through. We weren't given landing cards to fill out on the plane, no forms to fill out in the security area, either.

I needed a cup of tea, so we went up the escalators after collecting luggage to the Estuary -- oops, now the Limestone Cafe. The brew was good, but not the loose leaf of before. It served the purpose, though. After finishing our tea, we had a chat with the gent at the Sceptre desk, who called the number 7 van, which took us to the Dan Dooley office across from the terminal. We were given an upgrade from the economy car we'd reserved. I was afraid we would get a Nissan Micra -- instead, we drove off in a Peugeot 308 diesel, which has a roomy boot space under the hatch, and a reasonably torquey engine. We immediately named it Roar -- enounced in a flat, ennui-soaked way -- because of the Peugeot badge, which, to us, looks like a sleepwalking lion. It rained nearly all the way on the drive to Kenmare, but traffic was very light. Was grateful for that, because I went to the wrong lane at the Limerick tunnel & and had to back up to get to the attended booth, since we hadn't enough coins. We did follow the advice received here & avoided the N71 between Killarney & Kenmare on our first day, instead taking the N22 bypass toward Cork to the east. The R569 turn to the south is well marked. Quite a good road & fun to drive at a brisk pace. We made good time, reaching Kenmare in 3 hours, including a stop in Abbeyfeale to pick up a 9.99 phone at the Tesco. I did not need to call Kathleen, our landlady, for directions, because of the wonders of Google maps street view which helped me pinpoint the place during trip planning. Good thing, because the phone was not charged when we bought it. "So you've arrived already?!" she said as we pulled up -- she was in the doorway, seeing off the departing family. So we had. 26 Market Street, the Old Dressmaker's Cottage.

More to come.

Glad to hear that the trip is going well!  Thanks for checking in.

It's always best to get the rain over early, rather than later in the day -- it gives you better options.  biggrin  biggrin

Three hours to Kenmare with a shopping stop in Abbeyfeale  is pretty good time -- no 'dawdler', you!

Interesting that they didn't issue or require Landing cards, but I'm not surprised that Entry was smooth and easy.  It's ONE of the many reasons that I actually prefer Shannon as an entry airport.  I wish that connection options made it more available!  Did you book your trip through Sceptre?

Enjoy your time.  Leave a light on for me -- I'll be following along, in about a month -- hmm hmm

I booked everything on my own. Didn't see a Dooley desk, so we asked in at Sceptre & he was just the man to call the van. We've had little bits of luck like that on the whole trip, so far. It's become a fine afternoon, so we''re heading out for a short hike just south of town.

I look forward to more updates we fly into Shannon in less than three weeks and will spend our second week in Kenmare. Our first week is still not set so I'm watching the forum for suggestions.

Michele- I was pretty groggy, usually sleep better on the plane, & did not walk to the end of the terminal. The guy at Sceptre cheerfully offered to call the van, so I went no further. Will check when we leave next week; it wouldn't surprise me if I just missed it.

Jeff- We are really enjoying Kenmare. The local people are happy to point you to their favorite walking spots nearby & it really is a great base for touring. We feel much more at home than we would have in a larger town like Killarney. We went to Crowley's again last night "for an hour" but stayed for 3, since we were having such a good time. Peter runs a good place for drinks, music (not always trad) & craic -- no hot food, no tv -- reminds me of Sandy Bell's in Edinburgh.

It's Cashel today (plus whatever else we feel like) when we get going.

Bob -- We drove the Lee Valley from north to south on Wednesday & came upon Carriganass Castle after we left Gougane Barra. It was a good stop, very cool setting -- thanks for the tip.

Glad you enjoyed Kenmare - my favorite small town in Ireland. Did you walk Reenagross Park?

Reenagross Park may be part of tomorrow's activity. It's been on the list, but we've gotten diverted. It's supposed to be quite showery tomorrow, so we probably will stick close to town -- especially after today's road trip to Cashel. We still have another week here, happy to say. I can understand why you love Kenmare.

Don't forget to take a look at the Druid's Circle (signposted near the tourist office). How are you enjoying your cottage?

Kenmare is a great little town...and such friendly people.

The cottage suits us very well. As you know, it's in town which is very convenient - no worries about driving after a stop at the pub & the grocer or the butcher is a few minutes walk. Likewise, the stone circle is a left out the door & a 3 minute walk up the hill. We clambered over Cromwell's bridge & stopped by Our Lady's Well a couple of days ago; along the way we had a chat with the cow grazing near the well in the small enclosure next to the funeral home.

The cottage itself is about equally divided between the sitting room in front & the kitchen in the rear. I've got a fire going in the sitting room, as it's a blustery, misty morning. 2 bedrooms & bathrooms upstairs, so we can spread out a bit, and Mrs. Mac can retreat to the other room if a raucous snore session occurs. Plenty of hot water from the showers, too. So, no complaints -- a nice home from home.

The cottage sounds perfect. There is nothing like staying put for a week, checking out the local scene and being able to have a fire in your own living room on a "soft" morning. Enjoy!

Just a quick update-- Reenagross Park was very nice, the tree canopy provided some shelter from the rain. Today looked like the mostly fair weather day we were waiting for to do the Bears Ring & all I'll say for now is Wow! We had lunch at Josie's where the food & the view were excellent -- thanks for that tip, Michele (a Friday freebie post from a couple of years ago, I think).

Glad you made it out to Josie's. Bet you thought you would never get there on that little road! biggrin

The Autobahn the road to Josie's is not, but not bad compared to some others on the Beara and, say, Valentia Island. Jeff, there is quite a lot of scaffolding at the Rock. We thought it was quite impressive nevertheless. We watched the 20 minute film & explored on our own, though there are guided tours available. It was a long day to see it from Kenmare, but we combined it with a side trip to Blarney town & a bit of roaming through the Tipperary countryside.

From 2010 but nothing has changed https://www.flickr.com/photos/tony2phones/sets/72157626573128992/  The guided tours are well worth it and included in the admission charge.

Are you using a GPS or a map?

Primarily a map, Collins Road Atlas Touring Edition for the basic routes -- it is not meant to navigate the smaller rural roads (the L roads). Some of the smaller villages are not on it, either. We also use some of the material at the cottage, some dead reckoning & the old stop and ask technique.

As Tony said, it's a good idea to follow the guides at Cashel. The film is a good overview. Plan on a couple of hours minimum for the Rock and surroundings-- you'll want some time to take all the photos the place begs to be taken.

Sitting in the departure lounge after the best vacation ever. Glad we had all of the car insurance covers, including tires & glass. The rims and tires had a few extra rashes, probably from an avoidance maneuver on the N71 near Bohane. To follow up on an earlier question, there is no Dooley signage at Shannon. The 7 / Sceptre desk is the place to go. Will do a proper trip report as soon as I can.

Thanks to all for helping make this a great trip.

Glad to hear it all went well!

I'm usually 'Stuck' flying in and out of Dublin, even though I PREFER Shannon.  Seems to me that the Car Hire Desk was a shared area near the Exit Doors -- just opposite from the Top Shop store?  There WERE two or three companies sharing a long counter, if memory serves.  Has Dooley moved their Desk out to their Car Depot?  Seems like all you would NEED to do would be to 'Hop On' their Shuttle bus?
