Go As You Please

Michele,

First let me begin by thanking you for this wonderful service!

A friend and I are planning a "go as you please" vacation in August for 8 days. My questions are as follows:

1. Should we look to a travel agency to book this type of vacation or should we just do everything on our own, i.e. airfare, hotel / b&b, car rental, etc. Are the agencies going to provide legitimate savings?

2. Is it difficult to find accommodations in the heart of Ireland (outside tourist areas) at a moments notice?

3. With B&B's, can you typically get double beds?

The whole idea of this trip is to essentially explore and not be bound to prearranged travel plans. What do you (or anyone else reading this) think?

Once again, thanks for the opportunity to ask a few questions as this is my first time traveling overseas. Thank you!

- Sean

We planned the first and last night B&B and each owner called ahead for us when we told them where we were headed. They always picked a nice B&B in that town..... There was no problem in October but you may have some trouble in August finding openings and the last minute. I liked this way better - i will say.....we had never been there and weren't sure how the driving would be or what we wanted to do exactly. I would not have wanted to plan out the whole trip because we would have missed a lot. We changed our plans, our routes and the length of stay a few times......

Sean,

I'm glad you have found your way here to plan your trip to Ireland. Stannseniors has already give you a good tip or two. Now on to your questions:

1. It depends on the travel agent. Sometimes those that are very savvy can get you a good package. However, most people find that putting a few pieces of the puzzle together themselves can save money (if they have the time to do so). What you need is airfare and a car. If you then decide to book accommodations ahead, it is easy enough to do it yourself via email. You could look at both options to see what sort of prices you are coming up with and then compare.

2. It really depends on where and your dates. At the beginning of August is a bank holiday. Weekends are usually more crowded than weekdays. Generally, the best lodgings, those closer in to town and those in popular areas will fill up first. Personally, if I were traveling in August I would make reservations...but that is me. If you are not particular about lodgings something is always available. If you run into problems finding accommodations the tourist offices around Ireland will find you something for a small fee.

3. B&Bs & hotels have many different configurations of rooms. A double means one double bed. A twin bedded room has two twin beds. A family room usually has a double and one or more twins. Lately, more B&Bs are getting king and queen beds but they call them by different terms. A queen is called a king. A king is called a super king. Or you can go by measurements. A 5 foot bed is a queen and a 6 foot bed is a king. Confused yet? But double beds are very typical.
