Best tour groups.

Finally planning my life long dream of a trip to Ireland.  Thinking of West Ireland...any ideas, suggestions.  Also, what about tour groups.  I believe our agent uses Brendan Tours.

Welcome ..

Brendan do a lot of Self Drive is that what you want? For Escorted Coach Tours then much of a muchness unless you are looking at the small group market with the likes of Wolfhound or Vagabond.

The ideal tour will be on dates that suit, a cost that suits and most important goes where you want to go. I would also add the condition of enough free time, far too many tours have you glued to a seat 70% of the time you are not in bed exhausted. I have heard the quote "you can catch up with sleep on the bus"..

You might be lucky and have a good "agent" with knowledge of Ireland, however if you are relying on their wisdom run the details through a forum for comment before you commit. Forums are free and have a combination of informed, passionate and local knowledge. most of all a lot of experience of those Dream Trip first steps.

Thank for all the information. You brought up several good points and we will keep it in mind when deciding. Our plan is May or June to avoid the "summer crush". My grandmother came from Londonderry when she was 16 and was my favorite person, I know I will meet more like her when I travel. Thanks again.

Tony has rolled out the welcome mat for you, so as you plan we hope to be able to help with all your concerns and questions. In my opinion the best way to see Ireland is driving yourself around as opposed to a tour. Then you can go as you please, stop where you want and set your own pace. Since Londonderry is likely on your short list if you do choose an organized bus tour you will want one that includes that city on the itinerary.

May and June are good months for your visit. Explore your various options to see what will work out best for you. If it is a self-drive "package" you are looking at be aware that accommodation vouchers will greatly restrict where you can stay.

You might find that organised Tours which include Derry as part of an Ireland package will be one of the rush from here to there via gift shops type. There are some "local" tours covering Derry running from Belfast or if self driving can be added yourself, the North does have a lot to offer. If doing a typical coach tour consider adding a couple of days one or other end for some self exploring.
