I watched the Rick Steves video on Ireland a couple weeks ago, and he gives his kids (close to your kids age but perhaps slightly older) an allowance for their trips, and also a couple of times he and his wife have an adults-only meal, while the kids get to pick where they want to eat, nearby. It looked like a small village where they were eating. The kids picked a cheap casual place and the adults splurged someplace expensive.

Maybe your kids aren't quite old enough for that. But mine are. Once in Italy hubby and I had a "real" dinner while the kids, who were between ages 16 and 22 at the time, satisfied their wild urge for McDonald's...they reported it was utterly gross though!
