Seems I Know More About Ireland than Fáilte Ireland Does

I was merrily reading Failte Ireland's latest newsletter and came across a photo that they got wrong. "Bloggers visit Bunratty Castle" should be Blarney Castle. I'm thinking the caption writers aren't Irish. Or if they are Irish they have not been to either castle. Are they outsourcing their info to India or something? http://tinyurl.com/kou95tv

File this under: "Are we REALLY surprised?"

The real problem is that these are the people supposed to be running Ireland's tourism industry.. OK if it was a one off mistake with an amendment in the next issue then fair enough, everyone can slip up sometimes.. But it's when it comes as no surprise just as the norm then??

At least they replied to me on Twitter. Years ago when I took a test to be certified as an Ireland Travel Expert I noted that some of the questions and answers on that test were wrong. I let them know but nothing happened. Ivory tower mentality?

Been there done that.. As gramps used to say you cant educate pork..
Thankfully there are always the forums for those who want to get a little further than suggestions for Tourism Ireland and St Rick smile

There's a test to be certified as an Ireland Travel Expert? Cool! Where?

Tourism Ireland used to certify those who could complete their test. http://www.shamrockclub.net/ I did it way back when. Then they changed their rules. Now only travel agents can get certified for their "Shamrock Club".

Apart from myself who doesn't count, there are three Ireland experts on this single thread who I would trust further than many Travel Agents who have in some cases just paid for a certificate. It is a real shame that visitors are often sold totally unsuitable itineraries, left over rooms from Tours being a common self drive "Bargain" If the Shamrock Club was worth the same level of confidence it once was then many first time visitors might get to see more than Dublin, Dingle and Doolin with Kinsale now thrown in for good measure..

While I am humbled -- and, HONORED (Honoured?) -- to be included within such august company, I can't help but believe that ANYONE who has EVER visited Ireland -- even ONCE -- could probably do at LEAST as well at providing information comparable to Bord Failte ...   confuse  confuse

I am hardly an expert, but APPARENTLY, I appear to take Irish Tourism MUCH more seriously than the Irish Governments PAID representatives!  cry  cry
