My friend and I (two women from Germany) are planning to visit Ireland for one week in May this year. We already booked flights, we will be arriving in Kerry and departing from Dublin (Sunday to Sunday). We need to keep the costs of this trip as low as possible, so we wouldn´t want to get a car. Instead we would like to travel by foot, bus, train or maybe even hitchhike a little.
My question now is: What can we expect? I know that one week is not much and without a car there´s probably no chance of travelling a long distance. But maybe you have some ideas or could just outline what´s possible or best for us in this situation. Another point is that a friend of mine knows someone in Dingle where we could stay for one night. So it would be nice if we could make it there.
I´m thankful for every answer to this, we´re just starting on planning this trip, so everything is helpful!
While having a car is always ideal, it is quite possible to have a pleasant holiday visit without one. Basing in Killarney (or, Galway, or Dublin, for that matter) gives you access to LOTS of tourism options that aren't car dependent.
The Kerry airport is in Farranfore http://www.kerryairport.ie/transport/ with bus and rail links to Killarney. There are several 'day tour' options on offer in Killarney -- Ring of Kerry, Gap of Dunloe and Dingle. There is also Ross Castle, Muckross House, Gardens and Traditional Farms. Strolling, hiking, or even, jaunting car rides through the National Park can also while away many enjoyable hours. Night Life is quite vibrant, as well.
There are multiple trains from Killarney to Dublin every day. Tickets bought in advance, online, offer the best, lowest prices. Tickets can be purchased up to 28 days in advance, with the cheapest seats available then, sometimes, for as little as 10 Euro, Single. http://www.irishrail.ie/
Just to add to Bob's great recommendation to base yourself in Killarney, I might add that you look into Deros Coach Tours of Killarney. www.derotours.com
They offer day tours of the Ring of Kerry, the Gap of Dunloe, the Dingle Peninsula and a watercoach tour of the Lakes around Killarney.
Of all the places in Ireland, Killarney would be the one I would choose without a car, as it will have many options for you.
I agree that Killarney and Galway are great bases without a car. There are so many day trips available from both of them. Dublin is also good for day tours and your city vibe.
