I'm getting more definite about our itinerary and I wanted ask you, (and anyone else who may wish to), to tell me what you think.
We arrive from New York in Dublin on Sunday morning April 9th, one week before Easter. We stay 3 nights at Jurys Inn Christchurch. Monday and Tuesday will be spent exploring Dublin, learning in particular about the writers, the history in general, and the 1916 Rising in particular.
Wednesday we pick up our rented car and depart for Glendalough and Saint Kevin's monastery for a visit of moderate length, hoping to arrive in Dungarvan (my grandfather's birthplace) early enough to be able to see it in some degree of light and hopefully meet some of my relatives (working on finding them now). Do you think this can be done comfortably? I learned that I can't pick up the car until 10 Am in the city, and I'm still torn about taking a cab out to the airport in the early morning to get a jump on this leg of the trip, because it means that much to me to be able to arrive in Dungavan while it is still daylight.
Thursday we would like to visit Cashel and also Cahir Castle on our way to Killarney [feasable?] where we will spend 3 nights. Good Friday, Ring of Kerry. Saturday, Dingle Penninsula--both days with whatever additional we can get in (Killarney Park, Muckross, others).
Easter Sunday travel up the coast, (maybe take the ferry?), aiming to arrive in Galway for a two or three night stay. Will we have difficulty getting lunch, as you've said we might on Good Friday? If the weather is good, is it feasable to try to include Loop Head on this journey to Galway, or should we hold off until we return later to Ennis?
Monday and Tuesday, explore Connemara (sp?) and Galway.
Depending how many nights we stay in Galway, we will have either one or two nights remaining, during which we are planning to stay in Ennis (visiting the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, more) before departing from Shannon on Thursday, the 20th. I'm choosing Stonehaven as our place to stay. I hope I'm not sorry, the hotels just seem too expensive and others seem to have been pleased with Stonehaven.
Thank you and my many forum friends in advance for any comments.
If you want to get a jump on your long travel day from Dublin to Dungarvan you should take a taxi to the airport and pick up your car. Most of the car rental companies open at 6 am (but check with yours to be sure). You will certainly avoid a lot of traffic at that early hour. The visitor's center at Glendalough opens at 9:30, however the site is always open and you can walk through it yourselves and explore. If you decide to get the guided tour you can always do it when the center opens. Or you could pop into Lynham's of Laragh or the Glendalough Hotel for breakfast first before doing Glendalough.
You can do Cashel & Cahir on your way to Killarney, just do an inland route.
Easter Sunday: Lunch is a big family affair on this day. Many restaurants will be fully booked with Irish families. However, two people can often slip in at various places. Maybe a pub lunch? If the weather is fantastic you should take the ferry and do the coast of Clare, see the Cliffs of Moher and end in Galway. If the weather is not good take the main highway through Limerick to Galway and save the coast for later.
If you decide to save the coast of Clare for the day you drive from Galway to Ennis, if you get an early start you can include Loop Head.
