We are planning our trip for September. Any suggestions on when to get the best price and booking airline tickets. Not much of a gambler so it bothers me to think of waiting - my fear they would sky rocket in costs.
This far out, the airlines typically don't offer sale prices, in my experience, for September flights.
What the future brings, fare-wise is beyond the reach of MY crystal ball, but I usually start looking about 5-6 months out, to get a 'feel' for what typical prices are. That helps to let me recognize a 'Deal', when I see one.
One thing that we balance our flight decisions upon are a balance between prices and seat availability. I try to book seating on A340s or 767s (that utilize 2-4-2 or 2-5-2 seat layouts, rather than 757s with their 3 seat-isle-3 seat setups. It's worth it -- for us -- to even pay a bit more, so as not to spend 6-8 hours 'smushed up' against a strange, 'new, best friend'!
Try registering with some of the airline sites, like Aer Lingus, American, Delta, etc -- as they will email sale info, as it becomes available.
Likewise, Expedia, Airfarewatchdog and Travelocity offer 'Alerts' for monitoring price fluctuations.
Happy Hunting!
