Self-catering - Metered electricity

We are currently planning a visit in September. We are looking at self-catering locations in the south/southwest. For our past two trips we have done self-catering in the Roscommon/Fuerty area with everything included in the price (electricity, heat). Most of the properties I find in the south and southwest seem to charge extra for these things. Can you help us try and determine what a reasonable estimate would be for these costs for two people in the lodging for a one week period?

I realize that the numbers will vary, but we would like to try and estimate what our total lodging cost will be.

Thanks!

Wendy & Keith

I have reservations in a cottage near Kenmare. They are charging a flat rate of 6 euro per day for electric and heat. I'm not sure of any others since this will be our first trip.

E6/day sounds about right for a rental although a bit steep.. our bill for 2 months might be E100 ish so under E15 for a week.. It depends if there is a flat charge or if the owners work on Meter readings or as in some cases there is a slot metre? We use http://www.shamrockcottages.co.uk/  or http://www.imagineireland.com/ almost exclusively for self catering although there are other options.

My experiences have been in the 10 - 15 Euro per week range, as Tony said.  Last June, though, we rented a Large house for six of us -- including two small children.  It was fairly chilly (particularly for us Florida folk) and we did laundry nearly EVERY day -- as the airlines LOST a suitcase filled with the little ones' clothes.  I think we ended up paying about 50 Euro for our 13 days -- and the property owner rechecked his figures, 2 or 3 times -- as he couldn't BELIEVE that it was SO high!  biggrin  biggrin  Also, there were LOTS of showers, using up LOTS of Hot Water.

We had set the timers for the heat to come on about an hour before we expected to get home -- and then, CONSISTENTLY came home MUCH later -- on multiple nights, as well.

LOTS of mistakes, on our part -- and the house was large enough that we could have probably fitted another couple!

So that should be Best and Worst-Case Scenarios!  biggrin  biggrin biggrin  biggrin

I think I paid about 25 euro for electric for a one week rental. But we were sharing the house with friends from Florida (heat on 85 degrees...or thereabouts). Best thing to do is contact the owner and ask for a ballpark figure.

We stayed at Ivy Bridge Farm Cottage in October of 2012.  It was a bit cold and dreary (rainy), much of that time.  If memory serves, our utilities cost was 15 Euro.  We DID leave a day early, if that matters, but we did a few loads of clothes, and used the wood stove almost every night (Using the provided, AMPLE supply of peat!) -- although the fire was mostly an 'ambience' thing, it DID add a fair bit of warmth.

Being from Florida, we also used the supplemental, electric heat in the bathroom every time we showered.  We generally only used the boiler to 'take off the chill' -- and to keep the water hot.  We also do very LITTLE cooking that requires use of the oven -- It is, after all, a vacation for BOTH of us!  biggrin  biggrin
