Michelle...heading to Ireland in April for a 3 week fishing trip ... what is your experience on "pubs with rooms"...
we plan on staying in smaller towns and have read ala the Michelin guide that pubs in smaller towns often have rooms to rent... most it appears have no websites and or published phone numbers so not able now to identify...we plan on staying in an area 3 or 4 days to fish the area's rivers and on a limited budget, just need a bed to sleep in and maybe a pub downstairs to have a pint, a bite and share the day's fishing stories... 3 specific towns we are interested in are Tuam, Swinford and Cavan... ideally we would love to arrive in a local town, ask about local pub/room options and visit them
Any general info and specifics about the above towns would be appreciated... thanks...
p.s. have found a pub in Dungloe where we will be staying for 25 euro/person/night...pretty good price
My experience with pubs with rooms is that they vary wildly in quality. Depending on the pub some can be quite noisy. Actually many of the pubs with rooms do have websites. Just depends on the town. You could Google the town name and "pubs" + accommodation to see what comes up. Found this in Cavan by the Google search: http://www.mccaulsbar.com/ I'm sure you will find many more to peruse.
The price for the Dungloe pub is good. Does it include breakfast? Because you can get a nice B&B for around 35 euro per person sharing. How many people are going?
Depends where in Tuam? I often call into Sheridans north of Tuam on my way to Knock airport, great food, good pub http://www.sheridansmilltown.com/ Just south from Tuam http://bedandbreakfast.galway-ireland.ie/kilmore-house.htm long Time since I fished in the lakelands of Cavan we used to wild camp.. Try Deerpark Manor (oldstyle newbuild) B&B for Swinford, think the Emporium used to do accommodation but also think its changed hands recently..

thanks so much for your suggestions...we are checking them out as I write... we can add them to our lists in the towns I named where we are looking...
Michelle, you may be right about the noise in Pub B&Bs, but thought the prices might be less...fyi, the Dungloe place we reserved is at the Midtown Pub/B & B for 25 euro p/p/night and DOES include breakfast--the best price we have found so far...and has a parking lot in back of the building for roomers...that was especially good as the Midtown is right on Main Street where there is no long term parking. Hey, we are planning on taking good earplugs anyway...
There are a few E25 B&B's about but I tend to avoid the ones I know personally (in Clifden), the regular price for a B&B has gone up only slightly in the last 10 or so years from E30/35 to E30/40 although some have rocketed despite the world recession.. Unfortunately having a high ranking on TA is seen by some as a license to print money with a couple I would class as mediocre places charging upwards of E50/night.
