Hello.  I am pleased to find your website and hoping to get some useful advise as to our pending trip to Ireland.  My wife and I have always wanted to visit Ireland.  I was lucky to be awarded a couple of tickets to the Ryder Cup golf tournament in September so we are planning a trip out there.  We have a 3 and 1 year old that we are going to have to bring with us when we come.  We just can't seem to justify leaving them home with family.  What I am hoping is that someone can answer some if not all of my questions.  Thank you so much.


1. We have thought about renting a house / cottage on the west coast for the first 5 days of the trip so we can have a "home base" for the childred maybe to feal more comfortable with rather than being on the go all the time.  Is there a good area that you would recommend for this?


2.  When we make our way over to Dublin, is there a place you recommend to stay?


 


3.  I am checking with the Ryder Cup to see if they will let our children in with us to the golf tournamnet.  If they do not, is there reputable childcare in the area?

Welcome to the forum. I have some clients right now that would kill for your Ryder's Cup tickets! I have been working with them for well over a year because they are traveling to Ireland during Ryder's Cup. The problem is that golf and hotel consortiums have bought up all the hotel rooms around the area. Unless you can find a place to stay soon you will probably have to book through them and pay a high price.


1. Most self-catering rentals run from Saturday to Saturday. Some will rent mid-week or weekends in the off-season. With Ryder's Cup in September, you will have to make inquiries to see if any will give you a mid-week rental. I'm afraid you will have to give me a lot more info about your needs, likes and dislikes, what you want to see and do before I can recommend a place to stay put.


2. What are you looking for? A hotel, guesthouse or B&B? Do you need a family room that will accommodate all of you or two rooms? What is your budget? Ryder's Cup is being held at the K Club in Co. Kildare. I'm sure everything nearby is probably booked up by now. Do you have any idea of where else within an hour or so you might want to stay?


3. Hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs generally will recommend babysitting services. Once you know where you will be staying you can make an inquiry to your lodgings to find out what they recommend.


I'm afraid your questions spawned even more questions on my part. But I'm sure if you start your planning ASAP you can get everything in order.

Thank you for the reply.  Here are a few more details:


We are planning on flying into Shannon airport on the 16th of September.  From there we were thinking about trying to rent a house that would be our own for 5 nights that we could use for a base station so we can keep the little ones in as much a normal routine as possible.  Surfing the net, I found that the "County of Kerry" may be a good spot to stay?  From here we were thinking of doing day trips on the west coast.  From there we would like to head over to Straffon where the Ryder Cup is.  We have tickets for Thursday and Friday.  So we would need to find a place in the general area for two nights, Thursday and Friday.  Then we are planning on flying out on Saturday the 23rd out of Doublin. 


We have had family who visited Ireland in the last couple of years, they have many suggestions for us, but they did not take young children, so I am sure we need to plan our trip differently to cater more to them.  So any suggestions you have would be great.


You mentioned about the childcare... This is our biggest dilema on the trip.  We would idealy like to find someone close to the Ryder Cup for part of Thursday and Friday.  This is the only time we would possibly need childcare during the week, but it will probably be difficult to find something.

Since you are arriving on a Saturday I doubt if you will be able to find a 5 day rental. You might want to rent for a week and just leave the house early to go to Ryder Cup. Go to my "Links" page for links to self-catering establishments. Killarney would be a good base. While on that page you will want to check out B&B and hotel links to begin a search for somewhere to stay in Dublin/Kildare/surounding area. You will also find recommendations for good places to stay on my "Lodgings" page.


I have looked at the Ryder Cup website and they say that the dates in September are between Friday 22nd and Sunday 24th  2006. Is there something going on Thursday that I don't know about?

Hi Michele-


Above is a link I found on a house for rent that looks like a nice property.  Do you know anything about this one in particular?  When I did a search for County of Kerry for Dates from Sept. 16th, there were three pages of places.  Do you have any suggestions?


Also, the Ryder Cup is from Tuesday to Sunday.  There are practice rounds on Tues/Wed/Thurs that the public has tickets to as well.


Do you have any suggestions on a general area to try to stay for the two nights we will be at the Ryder Cup?  Like you said, it looks like the entire County of Killdare has been booked up.  Ideally, I would like to find a place that might offer childcare as well.


I really appreciate your willingness to help us out.

The link you posted is in Glenbeigh. You probably want to be near either Killarney or Kenmare. Actually there is more to do with the kids around Killarney.


I don't look at self-catering rentals when I am in Ireland, just B&Bs, hotels and guesthouses. Look for a 4-star rental.
