Dublin transportation

I was looking through the archives and decided to put this out for feedback. While we will do the Hop On Hop Off, we will also be doing a lot of public transportation. Does getting a Leap Card make sense to travel by bus, DART, & Luas? Is the Freedom of the City pass a better deal than the Hop On Hop ff 2 day pass? Since we will be based in Whitehall public transportation will be our mode of travel.

Tough call on Freedom of the City Pass versus the hopper. Freedom is good for 3 days and includes the hopper plus all Dublin bus public transport and the Airlink Express. Prices seem comparable although they are giving a 15% discount for online ordering of the hopper. Hopper is for 2 days. I didn't see a discount on the Freedom.

The Leap Card would be convenient since you will be doing a lot of traveling around the area. You would not have to purchase separate fares all the time. Plus you can top it up when needed.

Thanks Michele. The Airlink Express won't be of any use to us since we'll be first headed to Whitehall after landing. I noticed the 15% discount so the extras that come with the Freedom of the City Pass might not be worth the difference.

Try asking over on VT forum,, there are a couple of Dublin Locals on there that might have on the ground knowledge?

Thanks Bob- yes, this is very useful!

I noticed that the red hop on hop off bus now goes to Glasnevin, which is just down the road from where we'll be staying in Whitehall, but I'm still leaning (I think) towards the green busses. Any thoughts?

There is a SLIGHT advantage to the 'Green' buses, as they are run by Dublin Bus and USUALLY offer LIVE commentary, versus the 'canned', pre-recorded -- I'm told.

The Green also offer this:  http://www.walkingtours.ie/scheduled-tours/dublin-highlights-tour/  This is normally a 10 Euro fee -- but is waived if you show your Green, HOHO ticket stub.

I BELIEVE that BOTH companies now do a 'Two Calendar Day' ticket as default.  The Green offers a 15% discount if you Pre-Book, online.
