I carry mine with me in my cross-body handbag in a separate zippered compartment. If I'm in a hotel in Dublin I leave it in the room safe. I make color copies of my passport and keep it in a separate area from the actual passport. Then if the actual passport is lost I can use the copy to show who I am and get a new one.
I tried the waist money belt. Too uncomfortable and difficult to get to.
Found a lamb skin neck pouch that I like much better. It makes a strange little lump in my shirt, but am not in Ireland to make a fashion statement!
Won't leave my passport in hotel. That's just me. Probably be ok, but won't take a chance on it. I feel more in control if I have it in my possession at all times.

Our friends had theirs stolen from the hotel room in Dublin. We think it was an inside job and as their room was on a curve in the hall and no camera view. They took phones, ipads etc. We were all in the bar downstairs. They had to spend a day at the embassy getting a passport to travel home with. I kept mine on me for years and if there is a safe in the room will leave it there but still makes me nervous. We got passport cards last renewal and they are a nice backup, like a drivers card size. We do as Michelle and make copies of everything.
