I haven't flown Aer Lingus in quite some time. However, I agree with Elizabeth. Most airlines never check. The problem arises with a full flight and if you get on last to find no overhead or underseat space. That is when they start gate-checking carry-on.
I always travel with a large tote bag that can be folded up flat inside my carry-on. That way if I am forced to gate-check my bag I can transfer important items to the tote, which will go under the seat in front of me. Or if in a bulkhead seat I can put my purse into the tote too and it becomes my one "personal item".
Flew Aer Lingus out of PHX/Chicago on the last trip with carry on only. Had acquired legal carry on luggage for 2008 and 2010 trips with American and Delta. These were 23 1/2 inches long etc. However it seems that Aer Lingus downsized their dimensions shortly before our 2012 trip. There was quite a bit of chatter about it on various web a ights about how they were going to enforce it, so we bought smaller roller bags. They are right at the 21" limit and Aer lingus/United did not check them for size at PHX nor Aer Lingus in Chicago. We purchased them from our local Walmart and the brand is "Protege". Just bought another one last week for our GD. They come in two colors red or black. Cost: $29. So we now have 2 reds for the girls and black for myself. We fly on British Airlines for our trip in Oct, and these qualify for their size restrictions also. Hope this helps! Dan
Thank you so much for the information. We have small baggage, but it is at the 22 1/2" mark. I don't really want to check baggage, so we may get two that are the right size. Will check out the ones at Walmart. Or we may check a bag, still not sure.
6 days and a wake up. I can't believe it is almost here! Thanks for all your help.
This thread got me thinking I should check size limits for our upcoming trip. We will be checking bags. Here are United airline's updated size limits:
Carry-on baggage allowed
Each traveler can bring on board one carry-on bag plus one personal item free of charge.
Maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm), including handles and wheels
Maximum dimensions for your personal item, such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag or other small item, are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm)
Ihave to do some measuring, but this might change my original plans...
