We are new to the forum but would appreciate any advice. My wife and I will be traveling with our 3 and 7 year olds to Ireland for three weeks in July. We are going to be staying on Achill Island. We have traveled with the kids to Europe before but not to Ireland.
I have visted Ireland on one occassion so I have very limited knowledge of it.
Here are my questions:
Should I book our flight now? The cheapest for our July dates so far is $684 from Washington DC.
Are there must sees for the kids in Ireland? We would like to do several overnight trips but are not sure where? We purchased the book "Take the kids to Ireland"
Welcome to the forum. Will you spend most of your three weeks on Achill Island? Are you renting a self-catering unit? If so, is it booked already?
The airfare price you quoted looks very good for July. Many here have been getting much higher prices. You should take advantage of it before it disappears.
If most of your time is on Achill Island you will be limited to exploring the northwest portion of Ireland. What sort of things do your children enjoy doing?
I have good info about renting a car on my "Car Rental" page. Just click on IrelandYes Index and click the link. Let me know a bit more so I can make some suggestions.
Thanks for your email. We will be staying in a cottage for the three weeks on Achill Island. Our kids like be out doors and exploring. They like museams(sp) and the like.
Since we have a car do you have suggestions about things to do in the area?
Achill Island is very scenic and there are plenty of beautiful beaches. Of interest there are the Atlantic Drive, Deserted Village, hill walking, boating, etc. Not too far afield is the charming town of Westport and in Castlebar is the very interesting (and free) Museum of Country Life. All of Connemara is south of Achill with scenic drives, Kylemore Abbey, Dan O'Hara's Farm (near Clifden), Killary Harbor cruises, Connemara National Park and so much more.
If you have a good guidebook it will tell you of fun things to do in Galway, Sligo, etc. If you have good weather there is no end of fun outdoor activities such as horseback riding, mountain climbing, surfing, fishing, etc.
