Ok, so Im doing a last minute trip to Ireland and need some help.
My dates are August 25th-September 4th.
Im flying in to Dublin on the 25th and Departing Shannon on the 4th.
My son will be doing a semester abroad in Galway and Im accompanying him.Originally, I planned to use public transport on our trip, but am now considering renting a car.Im scared to drive on the left, but am now pondering the challenge.
Once consideration is that my son is going to have a lot of luggage given that he will be living in Galway for several months, plus he always packs heavy (IMHO).So public transportation would be difficult unless we go to Galway first from Dublin and drop off most of his stuff.Hes allowed to move in on the 25th.That is less than ideal, as well also have to finish the trip in Galway.Id rather not go there twice in order to maximize our travel days.OTOH, Im not sure if its safe to drive around with all his stuff visible in a compact car for a week either.
I need help putting together an itinerary.(Feel free to weigh in on the desirability of my destinations).
Most want to see/do:
·Castles and historic sites
·Kilkenny
·New Grange
·Cahir Castle
·Rock of Cashel (dont know about this one due to scaffolding)
·Cobh (titanic, emigration museum)
·Dingle P. or Ring of Kerry (considering a tour even if we do rent a car)
·Glendalough
·Whiskey tour
·In Galway: Aran islands, Cliffs of Moher
·Maybe Muckross House and Ross Castle in Kilarney
·Maybe Charles Fort in Kinsale
·Maybe Dublin
·Maybe daytrip to the north from Dublin?
About us: Mom with College student son. Were both fit hiker/runners who can go all day and still save energy for a couple pints and songs at night. I love museums, historic sites, & beautiful walks.I prefer rural areas, but dont mind the occasional city.
Land DUB. Collect a car and drive to Galway. Drop the baggage if possible. day and night 1 in Galway, maybe an afternoon Cliffs of Moher coach tour?
Day 2 head for Cashel, the scaffolding stops you seeing nothing and its a great value tour @E6 each, end the day in Cahir.
Day 3 to Middleton for Jameson's Whiskey then Cobh, I would stay in Cobh but the tourist vote goes over the passage west ferry and into Kinsale.
Day 4 aim for Killarney, possibly drop the car at Kerry Airport you can do the rest by tour bus/public transport.
Day 5 tour from Killarney, the ring or ding tours by Deros Tours are highly rated.
Day 6 train to Dublin from Killarney or just by Kerry Airport
Night 6, Day 7, Dublin. possible tour to either Newgrange or Glendalough/Wicklow.
Day 8 bus to Ennis for the last night, you can taxi to SNN in the morning your son can bus to Galway. Galway is too far to get to SNN in the early morning but they are now running a bus X51 from Galway @ 5am gets into SNN @ 06.10
