In March, a friend of mine and his 12 year old daughter will be going to Ireland.  They will land in Dublin and stay for two days before flying to London.  They plan to stay at a hotel near the airport, and just do a couple of tours with their time there.  Although I have been to Ireland many times, I've always had a car, so I was not a great source of information when he asked me about tours from that area. Told him that he could indeed take a taxi or bus to city center the first day and do the hop-on-hop-off tour to see the city and stay awake, but it's the second day that is the question.  They will have a full day to utilize, and perhaps thought that some of the tour companies have a route that picks people up at the airport hotels for tours of places like Powerscourt, Newgrange, Wicklow Mountains, etc. 

Any suggestions on if that is possible from the airport hotel area, and what might be the best option for a tour with a young girl?

Not sure any tours would pick up at the Airport?  For youngsters http://vikingsplash.com/ always gets a mention.  Most of the tours out from Dublin are as good as one another.

I think that the tour they take will depend on two things

1. Weather

2. the child's interests

If your friend's daughter is interested in history, then the Newgrange tour would be good. Since the Mary Gibbons tour picks up in the city but must go north to get to the sites, perhaps drop her an email to see if she can pick up at an airport hotel. Although parts of this tour require walking outdoors it would be less weather dependent than going south to Wicklow, Powerscourt and Glendalough. 

On their own, they could take DART to Malahide to see the castle. Plus check this website for lots more tours to look at: Visit Dublin.

There is also plenty to see in Dublin on the second day. 

There is a lot going on in Dublin in March including Adele performing on March 4 & 5, St. Patrick's Day, Easter and the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. They would be well advised to have their lodging reservations in place ASAP.
