Mount Errigal

I've searched the archives with limited success. Has anyone climbed Mt. Errigal? I'm looking for advice/suggestions on the easiest route and advice.

Thanks!

Roy

My one and only mountain hike was Knocknarea so I can't advise you on Mt. Errigal. Here are a few links that might help:

Get a good OS map, let people know where you are going and when you should be back and ask locally for advice. Many times the mountain rescue in the area will have more info. Looks like hiking poles and stout footwear is a good idea.

Long long time ago (30+yrs) I got half way up and had to get back with cloud cover dropping so with honesty I cant say anything much about it. You have done Croagh Patrick so Errigal shouldn't be a problem.

We hiked Mt. Errigal last June.We stayed in Downing,Donegal for 3 nights hoping for a clear day and had one on day two.

The climb was not difficult,a little boggy in the beginning.About 4 hours RT and we ate our packed lunch at the top.

On the day we went left of the stream was dryer, and you can see the path going up.

We are 50 & 54 (our legs did not hurt the next day) why I say not a difficult climb.

We will be doing some hillwalking in Co. Kerry this June.

Errigal Hostel used to take hikers up in short trips. The guy who runs them is a cancer survivor who is a bit of a local celebrity for his dedication to the area.

From the description in the Irish Times link that Michele posted, the walk up and back from the car park sounds pretty moderate.  Should be NO problem for you after Croagh Patrick!  biggrin biggrin

We had Gale Force 7 winds the day we attempted Patrick's climb and gave up after reaching the fence line.  A family coming down said their large 10 Year-old was nearly blown off the ridgeline! disbelief  disbelief

With a week to work it in, you SHOULD have at least ONE fair-weather day . . . biggrin  confuse  biggrin
