have you been in Galway in the past year? I'm just looking for recent info on traffic. I know in the past it had been a nightmare during rush hour. I'm wondering if it is bad all day these days, or just confined to rush hour or are things better? I remember taking an excursion to a grocery store on the outskirts of the city during afternoon rush and it was hideous,
I avoid going into the city unless I have to. Traffic is bad at rush hour and someone decided that traffic lights would be better than roundabouts clearly someone who travels by bus. I suppose it makes it easier for city folk that with dubious driving ability tourists not used to busy roundabouts but it has slowed things down.
And who invented Bus Lanes?? Its just like being being back in the UK

Last time I drove into Galway, it was a chaotic mess of construction. GPS was less than useless, as the new road lay out had it thinking that I had left the highway. And, forget about following the "at the roundabout, take the 'x' exit" --- They seemed to be adding exits to nearly every one -- and many of them didn't actually connect to anything!
Future expansion, I guess.

Depends where in the city you are headed or from where to where through the city? The Gort~Tuam section of the M18/M17 is making progress so that should take some weight off the Oranmore approach.
But the Headford Rd Shopping areas and UHG approach where the big roundabout and now nightmare traffic lights are is always manic.

I wish there was a good way to avoid it on the way to Connemara but unfortunately the Galway gauntlet of roundabouts and traffic lights must be dealt with.
Staying the west side of Galway isn't too bad, just avoid rush hour. its heading in and out from this side (east) that's the nightmare.
Killarney has the ring road which can get a little busy at rush hour

The one and only time I went into Galway, we left quite quickly. If I want traffic, I could stay at home. That's unfortunate, I know, because there are many places in Galway I'd love to visit. But as I get older, my tolerance of crowded, congested cities gets lower and lower. I'd much rather stay in a place like Westport, or better yet, Kilronan!
