getting to Castlebar and Belmullet from either Shannon or Dublin

I am trying to arrange a trip to Ireland from the US to attend a wedding.  The wedding will be in Castlebar on Friday afternoon and there is a reception planned for Sat. in Belmullet.  I was thinking of flying into Shannon and driving there and back.  My husband & I are scared of driving.  We drove in England and it wasn't enjoyable.  However we also drove on the wrong side (for us) since then in New Zealand and had no trouble. I was also thinking of flying into Dublin and taking a bus or train to Castlebar. However on the car rental websites, I don't find anything listed for renting a car in or near Castlebar.  Any suggestions on what might be best?  The bride has suggested we stay in Belmullet.  Does this make sense for both Fri. & Sat nights?

My main goal for this trip is to show up for the wedding, but also hope to see pretty scenery.

The road from Shannon to Castlebar is a pretty good one. The roads get smaller past Castlebar. I would rent the car in Shannon and drive. If you want some scenery, you could wander into Connemara on the way or on the way back. You could also visit Achill Island which is beautiful if the weather is clear.

As to where to stay, it depends on the time of day that the wedding happens. You could certainly stay in Belmullet but if you intend to travel back in the evening, you may niot like driving at night from Castlebar to Belmullet. It never bothers me, but some don't like traveling at night there.

Will you be there for more than the two days? The drive could be pretty tiring if you land and drive all the way to Castlebar. It's a beautiful section of trhe country and you can certainly find lits to do. What time of year will you be traveling?

Thanks for the suggestion.  We will be there in May. The wedding in Castlebar is at 4pm.  I thought we'd spend that night there and then spend the next night in Belmullet.  I would rather pack and move than drive at night I think.  We are visiting Edinburgh before coming to Ireland and I was thinking of flying from Glasgow to Knock, then back to US from Shannon.  But one place had a hefty drop charge on the rental car when I checked flying from Edinburgh to Galway. I haven't bought any airline tickets so plans are still fluid. We will be in this area only 4 days.  I appreciate your suggestions.

kays,

Knock is the nearest airport to Castlebar. If you can't fly into Knock then Shannon is your next best option. You should rent a car because Belmullet is remote. Because of fewer lodgings available in these areas you will want to book your accommodations soon.
