I wanted to get a really detailed road map of Ireland itself. The Ordnance Survey maps looked really good for Dublin, it was highly detailed and I immediately remembered certain areas of Dublin. I didn't see any other maps of Ireland by them (Ordnance Survey) at my bookstore, but wondered if anyone had ideas of good maps for Ireland as a whole, and also Belfast and Cork and perhaps other cities/towns in Ireland. The bookstore said they would order maps in for me if I desired.
It took about a week to arrive. Of course, it cost a pretty penny for shipping, but I could not order it from amazon.com. Some folks wait until they arrive to purchase one, but I like to do some pre-planning with it so that did not work for me.
Ordnance Survey has maps for all over Ireland. You can order them online or take the info to your favorite bookstore. Hope these two links help (I think the first one will meet your needs)!
I've also heard many good things about the Michelin Driving Atlas of Great Britain and Ireland (that's close to the title, anyway) and have been trying decide which to get. Many people seem to prefer the spiral bound atlases rather than a huge fold-out map that takes up all the windshield space as your navigator attempts to locate the necessary area. One comment I've heard about the Ordnance atlas is that it's so detailed that it's great for hiking, biking, etc., but requires an awful lot of page turning when driving. Some have mentioned that they preferred the Michelin. At that point I got a little "stuck" in trying to decide which to order (seems to be available from Amazon) and haven't ordered anything yet. Does anyone have experience with these two atlases? At this point, I'm leaning toward the Michelin, though I have no need for the Great Britain portion. Just to complicate matters - I think Collins is the other map atlas company I've also heard recommended. Too many choices sometimes!!
I've got both the Michelin and the Ordinance survey and agree that there is a lot of page turning on the ordinance survey map. It's very useful if you are looking to take some serious backroads, otherwise, Michelin is works well. Again, I travel with both.
Good answers from everyone! I generally use The Complete Road Atlas of Ireland by Ordnance Survey. It is in book form, spiral-bound and you flip the pages. Michelin also makes a map of only Ireland. I have the 2000 one #923. I must update and get a new one next time I am in Ireland. I also use the ones that the car rental companies give out. They are great for just general touring around in the car when you don't want that much detail. The detailed maps are great but sometimes you don't need all the detail, which can seem busy.
A hint for the Michelin map: Go to your copy center and blow up portions of the map by 150%. Each page should be what you will cover in one day. You can just keep that portion of the map in the front seat with the navigator for each day. That avoids the huge map issue.
