Hello- Heading off on our trip in just a week now.
I'm wondering if Glenveagh Castle is worth a stop. I'm interested mainly due to how beautiful the valley sounds.
It would be on the day we leave Derry (we'll be there 3 nights) and head to Donegal (one night). Our main stop for the day is Slieve League. 128 miles, 4hrs 7 minutes driving according to Google Maps, including the castle. If you include the castle, you're driving on an 'N' road versus an 'R' road, so maybe not that much of a time increase in real world driving.
After Donegal we're heading to Sligo for 2 nights, so stopping at the cliffs on the day we leave Derry really makes sense for us, so hoping for good weather that day.
Glenveagh is worth a stop. Wonderful castle, gardens, lake and trails. However, you probably need at least 2-3 hours there. Less it you only do the castle. I suppose it will depend on weather, how early you start, etc.
Yes, very important to get out the door at a decent time. The website says the castle opens at 0915. I've e-mailed to see if the gardens and trails open earlier.
