Logistical help, please

Hello everyone!  The family is hoping to be able to travel to Ireland in April for a wedding on Apr 20, in Donegal.  However, we cant go to Ireland without spending a few days in Dublin, where we have good friends.

I am looking at flying into Shannon, and renting a car there, but would need to return it somewhere between Donegal and Dublin, near a train station, so we can get to Dublin without bringing the car into the city. Or perhaps return it somewhere on the outskirts of Dublin?  Is the airport there a good option?  I don't want to get into a Dublin traffic nightmare.  :)  We would like to fly home from Dublin.

Also, which car rental is the least horrendous these days?

Thanks!

Marie

Congrats on planning another trip!  Dropping a car at the Dublin airport isn't too difficult -- particularly if you are heading in from either Donegal, or Belfast areas.  Particularly for those that 'Waive' the Insurances', Dooley is still getting decent grades (and their prices through their Fox  agent  https://www.foxrentacar.com/en/locations/ireland/shannon-airport.html   ), although that MAY change as their new owner (Enterprise) assumes full control.

For those that typically buy ALL available insurances, Hertz -- via their agent, Conn's (   http://www.connsirelandcarrental.com/car-rental-shannon  ) have been gaining lots of admirers.

Thank you, Bob. I will try these. Meanwhile, I am having a tough time finding flights. What is your usual method? We need to fly into Shannon and out of Dublin, as we will have small children and don't want to have to drive across Ireland twice! LOL Any thoughts are welcomed and appreciated. My thought is to fly to Shannon, drive to Donegal, spend several days there, drive to somewhere where we can return the car, take the train to Dublin, stay a while, then fly home from there.

I usually start with a 'Multi-City' search on Kayak -- but actually BOOK the tickets through the actual airline.

https://www.kayak.com/flights

I think Dan (Murphy) uses a different app, but I can't find the link at the moment.

Maria,
Dan here. I use: ita by Google. I had the app on both iPads, but the app mysteriously disappeared from my regular iPad but is still available on my mini iPad. I tried to restore it on the big iPad and a message came up that said it was no longer available as an app.???? It is being replaced by "Google flight"
It is, however, still available on their web sight: matrix.itasoftware.com. The app was so simple to use, but the down fall is that it doesn't allow multi-city (open jaw) options. I usually just try 2-1-way tickets when seeking open jaw flights using the app. Worked great on round trip flights.
I just checked their matrix.itasoftware.com web sight and it appears that does allow one way, round trip, and multi city.
Good luck!

Murphy

There is no problem returning the car to Dublin Airport. Since you will be approaching from the north you will not be driving through Dublin. Depending on the car company you return not at the airport itself but on the outskirts. Be sure to get directions. Many lots are located toward Santry.
