Spring trip possible

We are thinking about a spring trip to Ireland. It would be our "retirement trip!  Yes that's right!  We will be officially retired by the end of September.  We are thinking a month total again this time around and the question being; do we spend it all in Central and NW Ireland, or do we couple it with 2 weeks in Germany and 2 in NW Ireland.  Our time frame would be sometime in late March through Mid May.  Since we winter in Yuma Az. we would be flying out of PHX.  Will start watching airfare in various combinations of PHX, SNN, DUB, and FRA.

Spring in Ireland with April showers, April flowers, and baby lambs is enticing!

Dan,

Congratulations on your retirement! Once you get into it you will wonder how you ever worked and had a life at the same time. Now you have a big decision to make. Have you been to Germany before? I was there several years ago and enjoyed it although I much prefer Ireland. But if you have never been perhaps breaking up the trip into two countries will give you new horizons.

Michele,
We were in Germany for 4-5 days on our Eastern Europe tour 2 years ago. 50% of my ancestry was from Germany, and this gives me some potential for finding family over there. My Grandmorher visited relatives in Germany in the 1980's and they were elderly at that time, so no great expectations!
We have promised our two sons a trip to Ireland if/when our business property sells, and of course we would take our GD (she is now 13 and wants to go back!). If that were to happen, we would spend the whole month in Ireland and we would put the Germany trip off for an other year!

Greeting from the USA!

Hoping Michele doesn't mind if we talk about Germany a little bit on her Ireland forum! Your English makes sense! Much better than my German would!

My paternal Grandmother was full-blooded German, hence my interest in Germany. She and 2 of my Aunts visited near Cologne, back in the 1980's and connected with the "Kaup" relatives. They were quite elderly at that time and now, we would need to trace down the next 2 generations, if we were to re-connect.

We would like to spend 1 week and focus on the west 1/2 of Germany, likely starting/ending Frankfurt. Especially want to see the Rine Valley and Black Forest areas. A previous trip started in Frankfurt and then Eastward to Berlin and on into Poland and Central European countries.

And another week spent in portugal followed by 2 weeks in our all-time favorite foreign country-Ireland-which feels like "home" to us now, having been going there alternate years since 2006!
Regards
Dan

 Hope so too.:o)

btw you can combine both trips Ireland and Germany. There are cheap flights from Dublin to Cologne where your relatives live nearby

I prefer Frankfurt Hahn-Airport to Kerry County Airport near Faranfore /Killarney.

Hahn Airport is a former US-Military Base about 1 hr drive from Frankfurt city center.

Rhine and Mosel Valley with castles (for ex Burg Eltz)and vineyards are not far away.

But you need to rent a car to get around from Hahn.

There are also buses going from Hahn to Frankfurt ,Trier ,Luxemburg and Koblenz

The other way round there are going flights to Dublin and Kerry from Hahn with Ryanair

So its not totally offtopic ;o))

Here some links in easy reach from Frankfurt Intl. Airport.

Going north on your way to Cologne

1,5 hr drive Eltz Castle

and Mosel river valley

Going south from Frankfurt

1 hr drive Heidelberg

2,5 hrs drive Glottertal Black Forest

back to topic

We also have booked our spring trip to ireland

Do you know when the rally of lakes in Killarney is taking place in 2018?

I don't think dates are 'SET" for 2018 yet, but will LIKELY be 29 April - 1 May.

The Rally of the Lakes is usually held in Killarney on the last weekend in April.  In 2017 the dates were 28 - 30 April.  There is usually a day or two of crowd over-lap on either side of the event.

The rally is generally the first weekend in May and coincides with the Bank Holiday. Looks like May 4 - 6 might be the dates for 2018. http://killarneyanddistrictmotorclub.ie/

I don't mind your discussing a side trip to Germany here. You can also PM each other if you like.
