Laundry-What should we do?

We're planning on being in Ireland long enough that we won't be able to take our whole wardrobe with us, which means only one thing: we'll have to do laundry somewhere. Is this something we can do at the bed and breakfasts? Or will we have to find a laundromat somewhere? I've already read the post about how the laundromats work (and how things can get backed up sometimes!) so I'd like to search out all of my options.

Jeanne,

Now I'm confused. Is it Jeanne or Laurel?

Most B&Bs will not do your laundry for you. They have too much of their own to do for the B&B. I have friends in the biz and their laundry room is going from dawn to dusk every day. Think of towels, sheets, bath mats, etc. from six rooms to wash every day.

There are launderettes in almost every city and town in Ireland. I suggest you check your itinerary and choose a day halfway through your trip when you will be staying in the same place for two nights. Then you can drop your laundry off in the morning, go sightseeing and pick up the laundry in the late afternoon or next morning all washed, dried and folded. You are better off to do it on a weekday.

Hi Michele,
Sorry for the confusion. My daughter (Laurel) was searching the archives for answers to her questions (on my computer) and I told her to go ahead and post her question.

We have two groups going to Ireland. Laurel and her friend will leave end of May, and starting in Belfast will work their way down to Dublin, Waterford, Cork, Killarney, Galway, etc. making a big arc. The two of them will take about three weeks to do that.

My husband and I (arriving early June) are renting a cottage in Killarney to use as a base and take short trips/excursions from there. We've worked it out so that Laurel will hit Killarney at about the time that we are there so she can do laundry at our cottage. Since she'll be there much longer than we will, though, and traveling further, she's going to have to figure out where to take care of laundry along the way.

We've done hand washables when we've stayed in hotels, but I know B&B's are different and you won't necessarily have a private bathroom. So we figured laundromats are the way to go. We didn't realize though, that they are not self-serve, so that bit of info will help her to plan better.

Thanks!
Jeanne (Laurel's Mom!) : )

Jeanne,

Thanks for explaining. Actually most B&Bs do have en suite rooms nowadays. Although most owners would frown on doing a lot of laundry in the sink. Rinsing out a few socks is okay but not doing a whole wardrobe. There are some self-service launderettes but most are full-service ones. Hostels many times will have self-service laundry facilities.

It sounds like a fun but complicated trip.

While surfing around looking at B&B websites I have noticed the odd one that has laundry facilities for guests. Now that I think about it, those may be guesthouses. I rather think they would have been from Michele's Lodging page, so check the websites of places in the area you plan to be when you will need laundry.

In most of the cottages we've rented, they've had washers and dryers in the cottage.  Sorry!  Can't help you with the B&B.  I have seen the laundromats here and there in towns tho.  In the last cottage we rented, the owner (who lived downstairs) did my laundry for me!  Our cottage had facilities, but the dryer was on the fritz, so she just ran them for me, as her husband was ill that week.
