Is it true that at customs one's shoes may be confiscated due to fears of mad cow disease? This sounds like a joke, but the person who told us this seemed completely serious.
It's a joke. As I understand it mad cow disease is caused by the animals eating contaminated feed not something on someone's shoes. Several years ago there was a foot and mouth outbreak in Britain and everyone entering Ireland had to walk across a spongy doormat soaked in disinfectant at the airport. Your shoes are safe.
Thanks very much, Michele. My husband and I are so excited to be visiting Donegal this May. His mother is from the region, and he spent parts of his youth there, but has not been back in decades. His mother left him a few acres near Letterkenny, and we will be staying in Dungloe. We look forward to exploring and doing alot of hiking. Can't wait!
That sounds like a wonderful trip. Are you self-catering near Dungloe? The Donegal coastline is glorious and I know you will enjoy exploring and hiking. I always like walking the beautiful beaches there. Have fun and let us know how you liked it. If you have any other questions, feel free to post.
