Money Stuff

Hi Michele,

My honeymoon trip is approaching and the itinerary is done and everything is booked, but I'm starting to get nervous about all of the little things. This is my first international trip, so I'm am worried about things I that I need to know...but don't know I should. First off...you say to exchange money at banks and not at the airport. How much money is a good amount to have upon arrival? We are not rented a car right away. We just need to get into Dublin and stowe our bags and do some sight seeing. How much money should we have converted to get by until we can go to a bank in Dublin? Are there banks easily accessible in all of the major towns? Is it better just to use credit if it is available?

your help is always appreciated..
Shawn

Everyone's travel style is different, but I usually get some money out of an ATM (changing over traveler's checks will also work) when I arrive at the airport (for me, 100 euros works fine since I put my accommodations and larger meals on the credit card whenever possible). Once you get into the city...banks, ATMs and Bureau de Change locations are readily available.

Banks are easy to come by in just about every Irish town...and most have 24-hour ATM access as well.

Our latest podcast on http://www.irishfireside.com just happens to cover Money Matters in Ireland (Episode #5), so I suggest checking it out. If you have any trouble with the files just email me from the site.

As a first time visitor, you also might want to listen to Episode #3B-Shannon Airport Introduction
which gives a "what to expect" when you arrive in Shannon. The process is very similar to Dublin...except that the airport is busier and the food and shopping is set up a little differently.

Good luck

i would not bother exchanging money til you get here.

my parents tried to exchange in the states before they arrived and it was a horrible exchange rate.

our best rates have always been using the atm - like yesiree said - just get some euros at the atm at dublin airport as you leave and you should be set.

i have noticed here in galway that they charge a larger fee for cashing traveler's checks than just cash - but go with your comfort level.

thanks for the great tips guys. It's good to know that it is not as big of a production as I thought.

Shawn,

There is a bank at both Shannon and Dublin airports and they have ATMs also. It is at some bureaux de change you may get unfavorable rates. So there is really no problem getting some money on arrival at the airport.
