Green Dragon: Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks, Greeen Dragon for the Travelocity car rental suggestion.  I just looked into it.  For an automatic, economy - total cost for our Aug. 1 - 14 trip is $248.66.  I noticed most of these cars don't have air conditioning.  I may have to consider this as an option. I'll call our credit card company tomorrow and see about getting 'the letter'

Thanks again

Caroline

Caroline,

That is a great rate for an automatic for two weeks in August. It always pays to shop around.

I just cancelled a car reservation yesterday from Travelosity...around the same $$, which I thought was great. I called as well because even though I clicked "automatic" car desired, I was booked with a manual transmission. The gentleman (Mike) from travelosity told me that an automatic was about twice the cost of a manual.I ended up booking with Irishcarrentals.com...got a Corolla automatic with an additional driver added for a total of $427 for 10 days (including cancellation insurance option).I would definitely call to be sure the car is an automatic !

Yes, do double check everything!  I once got a great quote, and found out it was for January, not June :)

'The Letter' is a letter from your Platinum Mastercard company, verifying that it will cover the insurance, so you don't need to buy the CDW (which saves a lot of cash in Ireland!).  Having it in writing saves headaches at checkin ;)

I'm so glad I could help!

Hi Everyone,

Always, always, always check all the fine print and double and triple check all the info for car rental reservations. I know it sounds boring but that way you will be in for no unpleasant surprises when you arrive.

Hi all, just a note on car rentals. I went through irishcarrentals.com this year, breaking my allegiance with O'Scannlain. The problem wasn't O'Scannlain, but I was pretty dissatisfied with Hertz and there wlays seems to be something new tha they charge you for. Last year they told me that if you used a credit card to cover your CDW, that it cancelled all of the other coverage including liability. Not true though.

I called the 888 number for the US for irish car rentals and got a call back from Ann who happens to have her office in Castlerock Colorado, just south of me. She explained everything that would be asked of me and what I would be told when I got to the counter. So far my experience has been very good. I'll report back when I return in June. Their prices have always been competitive.
