Irish TV?

Last night my husband said to me, "I wonder what TV is like in Ireland?"  Not that we'll in front of the tube much, but I'm sure it is different from here, so I thought it would be something interesting to discuss here.  Also, do the rooms at B&Bs even have TV's in them?  Just wondering - we usually like to have it on when we are getting ready in the morning for local news, weather, etc.

Annette,

Most places you are staying will have a TV in the room with the exception of Cullinan's. Sometimes in the smaller more rural areas they don't have a TV in your room. But if not, that is an excuse to go into the lounge and meet other guests. Not a bad thing at all.

You can actually watch Irish TV on your computer. I watch the news frequently. Go to www.rte.ie

You probably don't have small kids with you, but Dora the Explorer speaks in Gaelic in Ireland, teaching the kids Spanish!  We found that very interesting!   Oh, and What's the Story in Ballimorey.  Another kids show.  Lots of cartoons on The DEN.

About 3 -5 different channels unless they have satalite or cable.  A movie almost every night.  We watched Minority Report and saw that they had Godzilla another night.  We found a program called "Holiday Homes from Hell".  THAT was interesting!  Lots of home maker shows, or realitor shows, showing homes to young couples, showing them how to remodel the cottages, etc.

One show we discovered was Little Britain.  Funny!  Crude, but funny.

We didn't have a lot of time to watch TV, but had some down time now and then, waiting for our reservations at a restaurant or early in the morning while we were getting ready to head out.

Ok, as a tourist, the tv broadcasts here are more than adequate.

But as a resident who was spoiled in the states with cable, tivo and netflix... we miss American networks with their abundance of channels and choices.

There are a number of morning shows but they don't have as much news content as you would expect. For news, we almost have to watch BBC and local news is best on the radio (each county apparently has a station).

The Irish language station is enjoyable. they have the best irish history shows with english subtitles. They also have 'survivor' which is my secret weakness but all the narration is in Irish, albeit quite a few weeks behind the US broadcasts.

We get a lot of American shows in syndication - scrubs, friends, the simpsons, lost, desperate housewives, buffy the vampire slayer, etc... but they seem addicted to soaps - daytime, primetime and the weekend condensations - they are ALWAYS ON!

and what i wouldn't give to be able to watch a SF Giants baseball game that started before midnight. i guess that is the price i have to pay to live here for our 2 year 'working' vacation.
