I’m so glad I found this website before our upcoming trip to Ireland – I only wish I would have found it sooner! My husband, 8 year old, and my father and I are all preparing for our first trip to Ireland (12 days) to see where my father’s parents are from (Youghal and Waterford City, respectively), and of course to take in the sights.
I ordered your book, Michele, and received it on Saturday, and spent Sunday starting to go through it. I noticed that none of the B&Bs we reserved are listed in the book, so I’m hoping for the best. Has anyone stayed at or heard anything about these B&Bs?
Hillcrest B&B in Ahakista
Cairbre House in Dungarvan
Slieve Elva in Lisdoonvarna
We opted to stay three nights in Ahakista, and four nights in each of the other two places, then go on day trips from our home base. Is this type of plan ok? Most of the itineraries I’ve scanned have been a lot more active than this.
Has anyone been on a jaunting car tour of Killarney National park? If you’ve experienced one of these tours, please let me know what you thought about it!
Also, many thanks to everyone! I've been reading through the postings and the information has been extremely helpful!
Welcome to the forum! I have not visited those B&Bs so you will have to let us know how you enjoyed them when you return. Your itinerary sounds very relaxed. Most people try to pack a lot in and many times I suggest they slow down. It is better to savor Ireland rather than speed through it. And that is what you are going to do. I assume that you will fly into and out of Shannon? Are you driving from one of those B&Bs to the airport on your last day?
We are flying in and out of Shannon, yes. The final days we will be staying in Lisdoonvarna, and driving to the airport. Do you suggest that we stay closer to the airport the final night maybe? After reading some of the posts, I think we may try to attend the Traditional Night at Bunratty, so maybe this would be a good activity to try to do the final night, and then stay closer to the airport?
It probably depends on when your flight is. You should give yourselves at least 1 1/2 hours to drive to the airport and check-in for international flights are 2-3 hours in advance of flight time. Check with your airline on that.
If you want to do Traditional Irish Night, then you should stay nearby in Bunratty. However, you could also do Dunguaire Castle Banquet from Lisdoonvarna. You have choices.
