Wireless Internet and Skype

Well I just put my daughter on a plane headed for Belfast! On Friday my husband and I head for Shannon/Killarney. Can't wait!

I have a couple of internet questions. Michelle, I've been to your internet access page and noticed a list of internet cafe's. I assume that you can use their computers there, but do they have wireless internet for you to use your own computer? Also, I read an email from someone who said they were headed to McDonalds to use the wireless internet. Borders Books and Starbucks and other assorted places here have wireless internet for free use. Does McDonalds do that in Ireland, or did I read that wrong? Or are there other places that have wireless readily accessible?

My daughter and I have downloaded Skype to use for communication (other than emails). We're able to communicate computer to computer, and computer to cell phone that way. Anyone else use Skype in Ireland with success?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide. I'll be sure and post a report when we return!

Jeanne,

I have a friend living in Ireland who uses Skype successfully there. As for wireless Internet usage, this is really just recently booming in Ireland. Most Internet cafes will have access for your own computer. Whether it is wireless depends on how up to date they are. There is a fee at those places.

More and more lodgings are providing wireless Internet for their guests. Some provide it free and others charge. It will be a hit or miss thing that your daughter will have to experiment with. There are devices you can purchase that will tell you if there are any signals in the area. But probably the best way to find out is word of mouth. Ask around while there. As for McDonald's restaurants, I don't know. Check out this link: http://www.bitbuzz.com/pages/hotspots.htm

I hope you all have a wonderful trip. We will look forward to hearing all about it. Bon Voyage!

Michele

Thanks so much, Michele, and to everyone who has given us such great advice for this trip. Being able to ask questions here has reduced the stress level of planning a trip dramatically. I will report back and let you know how all of the internet issues work out over there. Hopefully I can provide a few tips that will be helpful when I return.
Off we go!
