ashford castle rumors

i thought i would just mention a rumor going round here in galway -

local people are saying that the ashford castle hotel is not proving profitable and that the american ownership group might have to close it down. no one knows if they would sell it or just cease to function, but it is such a stand-out landmark that i wanted to encourage everyone to go there while they can.

i know they try to make themselves exclusive and post signs saying 'residents only' - but we always walk in like we own the place and have a drink, then walk the grounds. no one has ever hassled us and always made us feel welcome.

Kathy,

Thanks for the "head's up" on Ashford Castle. What a pity if it does close. Funny thing is when my clients try to get reservations there they are always full! Maybe it is just publicity?!

I always ignore that sign too. I find if you walk around like you own the place they think you might be staying there. The grounds are lovely and I go in by the local's entrance so I don't have to pay.

P.S. Is the roof still off Cohan's?

i can't quite tell if the roof is still gone or not, but i would assume so since there is still no progress in the refurbishment.

i have had 2 great lunches at 'the hungry monk' - we highly recommend it.

Thanks Kathy,

Yes, I like the Hungry Monk too. They always have good food. The Quiet Man Coffee Shop has great sandwiches.
