First Time Itinerary

What a great site, just found it, thanks!

We are taking our first trip.  8 nights total, too short.  We've found that our sons, ages 12 and 14, like cities so we were planning the following itinerary.  If we're making a mistake, would be interested in hearing thoughts of those on this board.

Dublin 3 nights

Kilkenny 1 night

Kinsale 1 night

Killarney 2 nights

Ennis 1 night

Home from shannon airport.

I'm worrying, which I often do, whether we're (i) doing too much and (ii) seeing too much of the same thing.  We'll enjoy the quaint villages etc. but hope there will be some fun stuff to do along the way.  Perhaps we should be heading towards Galway?  Too much time in Killarney--we have lots of scenic hills in San Francisco.  We know the boys will like Irish music etc at night, IF we can find it--I've read about the pub hours on this board and elsewhere.  The 14 year old looks 18 but the 12 year old only looks 14.  Our travel dates are Aguust 11 through August 20.  Perhaps we can find some festivals for music.

We're staying in hotels generally because I was concerned about the time required to search for B&Bs as we drive around, especially needing two rooms.

Your advice appreciated!

John, you didn't say how much time before you go, but you can certainly pre-book B&Bs from home. Practically every B&B in Ireland has its own website and can accept bookings online or via e-mail. Or they have their phone number and you can call and actually talk to someone with a charming Irish accent.

Michele's website has some recommendations, or if you have time you should order her book which has many more choices.

On our last trip we needed two twins and a single, and had no trouble at all reserving them.

Except for the splurge of staying in a castle hotel one night, I would always choose a B&B over a hotel.

John,

Welcome to the forum! Dude's advice about B&Bs is very good. There are many more B&Bs than there are hotels and the prices are lower. Were you thinking of just "winging it" or are you going to have a firm intinerary? What time of year are you going?

Given your short time in Ireland, you might want to consider just 2 nights in Dublin. Then you could add another two-night stay elsewhere in your trip. You say that you prefer small towns but your children like cities. You will get the big city experience with Dublin. Be sure to make reservations there.

I like Kinsale but I like Dingle much better. You might want to think about another go at an itinerary.

As for pubs, they tend to bend the rules to suit themselves especially out in the countryside. If you keep a low profile your kids may just be ignored as they enjoy the music. However, if they ask you to leave because of the kids ages then do so without a fuss.
