Hi:


My mother was 3rd generation Irish-American and she died last May.  We as a family agreed she would like some of her ashes to rest in the "old sod."  She had been to Ireland a number of times and orchestrated some family visits.  Her ashes rest in a little wooden container just a little larger than a shot-glass.  What are the rules and regulations for transporting something like this through customs into Ireland?  We would like to put her to rest in the soil rather than "casting her in the wind."  Are there any special regulations we need to know of?


Any info you can give me would be a great help.

I just saw an ad, not 20 minutes ago, in the Irish American News paper/magazine in the Chicago area, for a service called "Ashes to Ireland."  I haven't checked out the web site, but here's the address given: www.ashes.ie

My condolences on the loss of your mother. Marsha's link may be just what you are looking for. The following are regulations for transport on a plane:


The carriage of ashes is permitted, however, provided a copy of the death certificate and the cremation certificate accompanies them. The passenger in possession of the ashes must ensure they are securely packaged in an appropriate container and should include them in their hand baggage. We also advise that the handling agents be informed when checking in. Conditions of Carriage Article 9.1(vi)
