Hello, I have an itinerary question for my trip this fall. We will be flying into Shannon and then staying the first two nights of our trip in Adare. Then, I was thinking of taking the train from Limerick to Dublin, and staying there for a couple of nights. Here are some of the questions I can think of at the moment: 1. How expensive is it to get a cab from Shannon to Adare? And Adare to Limerick? 2. Would we leave from Limerick or Limerick Junction? 3. I think we would be taking the train into Hueston Station in Dublin, yes? Is that in the heart of the city, pretty much? Is it a good neighborhood? 4. Could we take a trains down through the south coast, and end up back in Shannon? (Or Limerick, at least?) Thanks, Joe
Welcome to the forum. I don't have exact taxi fares.
1. From Shannon Airport to Adare is approximately 55 euro. From Adare to Limerick approximately 24 euro.
2. Limerick is much closer to Adare than Limerick Junction, which is near Tipperary town.
3. Heuston Station is near Phoenix Park. It is not right near all the sightseeing in Dublin. The best areas to stay are Dublin 2 and Dublin 4. Dublin 2 is central and very close to most everything.
4. Dublin is the hub of a spider web for train travel. The spokes of that web go out from there. I don't know where you want to go in the south. Most likely you would have to return to Dublin to get another train to Limerick. However, that depends entirely on your destinations.
I suggest you go to my Transport page and click through to Irish Rail. From there you can see their system, timetables, etc.
Taking public transportation in Ireland requires much advance planning since you are tied to train and bus schedules. The best way to see Ireland is by car.
Thanks so much for your prompt reply. And yes, I know in my heart that the trip will be better by car!
I was amused to read one member's post about a March 2000 trip, where he or she stated how much they really hated driving over there -- I was over there the same month, and I felt exactly the same way!
But on balance, driving has still got to be better than being herded around on a tour bus or playing the hurry-up-and-wait game of mass transit.
(I think I will splurge for a nicer car than last time -- those Opels aren't made for passing people! And also, I'd like to get one of those in-car navigation systems.)
I'm glad to hear you have decided to rent a car. You can lessen the anxiety of driving if you plan a trip where you don't have a lot of driving to do in any one day. There are also day tours you can take from many different places in Ireland. Perhaps doing a mix of driving and tours would break it up. If you win the lottery between now and then you could always rent a chauffeur-driven Mercedes! Let me know if you would like a recommendation for that.
